Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. How many walks/tours will you organize and how many people on each walk?
- 2x virtual 'Zoom' briefing - for up to 100 people per session (7th+10th October TBC)
- Individual Photo Walks throughout the first 2 weeks of the month as and when suited.
- Post production e.g. image selection and uploads to Wiki during the last 2 weeks of October
2. What kind of content will the walks focus on? Why is this topic a priority?
- WikiLovesMonuments - Capturing selected Worthing monuments considering light, shade, framing pattern and details. Encouraging participation of international and neuro diverse artists incl. BAME community/ photographers. Worthing has a rich history of welcoming refugees and not fully received visibility for this. BAME communities have struggled to be heard and seen. Gaining credit/ visibility as producer/photographer may add confidence and prospects. 'Neuro diverse' individuals may enjoy the 'going it alone' aspect of the proposed "individual" photo hunts and the technical aspects may come natural to these participants.
It may also be of interest to engage the older local population in the concept of capturing familiar monuments and the aspect of digitisation/ Wiki use/ understanding. Guidance will be given during zoom briefing.
Adding visual content to Wikimedia Monuments Project + Commons and contribute to open source knowledge/ making Worthing more internationally/ digitally accessible.
Importance of mending inaccurate content on WikiVoyage "Worthing" https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Worthing e.g. The last ever BirdMan event took place in 2015 - I took part and jumped 12m into the sea for charity! Worthing has a rich international history and architectural gems incl. Victorian Fishing cottages, Art Deco and Modernist.
3. What is the plan to ensure images will be used on Wikimedia projects?
- During Photo Walk briefing to identify existing Wiki users/experts to take lead roles to add to the proposed projects e.g. WikiLovesMonuments, WikiMedia Commons, WikiVoyage
The workshop host will collate all work produced and upload any missed quality images by final date: 30/11/20
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Local photographers targeted via Brighton Photo Fringe will ensure they already have equipment and passionand the potential to produce high quality content. Supported by experienced Photo Walks Leader J Horbaschk teaching visual and tech skills. She can help carry out final post-production and upload content. Sample work: https://www.flickr.com/photos/freshandwild/albums/72157622371200469
5. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- The key aspect of the project is to engage and benefit an underrepresented community such as BAME,(learning) disabled/ autistic adults, elderly and those who rely on visual and accessible content and may not know about the new/ chosen Wiki Projects and are eager to help produce and contribute.
Finally we would like to help raise the profile of Wiki projects, which (in our region) have been marked as 'low educational value'. We want to harness the potential of Wiki pages learning more, getting engaged and bringing Worthing closer to an international/ digital community.
Languages spoken in our team: fluent English and German with keen learning of Spanish, French and Mandarin
The value of Julia's expertise is estimated at a day rate of £800 so event presents good value for money.
Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:
- Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons: min. 20-30 photo uploads
- Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects: 10-20 photos plus written content (If time/ situ allows I would like to encourage added experimentation with Wiki Quotes surrounding the BLM movement.)
Participants social media sharing and motivation increase. Also exposure for photographers/ producers who have not received recognition and are under represented in the community.
Exposure for Worthing town, which has received little coverage internationally despite having a rich international heritage.
