Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

Wiki Loves Folklore 2022 is the fourth edition of the international photography contest where the photographers can contribute media (photographs, video, and audio) about their local folk culture to Wikimedia Commons under free licenses to be used on Wikipedia and any other places with attribution. This photography contest is focused on folk culture of different regions, including folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folklore, and tradition, including ballads, folktales, fairy tales, legends, traditional song and dance, folk plays, games, seasonal events, calendar customs, folk arts, folk religion, mythology, etc. The campaign is targeted at protecting the world’s intangible cultural heritage.
Wiki Loves Folklore provides an opportunity for the local folklore enthusiasts and conservationists to document their local rituals, folk cultural activities, and songs and make them freely available on the Commons. It will animate the broader Wikimedia community in improving its coverage on various cultures and new forms of heritage that haven’t otherwise been documented so far. In the last two years, we have been able to document around 27000 media from over 125+ countries. In 2019, we had a successful international edition that ran from 1-28 Feb 2019 where we got 7121 images from 1700+ participants from over 120 countries in the theme pertaining to the festivals and ceremonies from different parts of the world. In 2020, the competition elicited 19,052 image submissions, 144 videos, and 13 audio files, the campaign documented folk culture of over 125 countries around the globe. Over 1496 photographers took part and around 20 affiliates collaborated in the project. In 2021, during the midst of pandemic, the contest received 7737 images on Wikimedia commons from 399 participants from over 101 countries. We will use the categories on English Wikipedia to present subcategories to our participants for additional references. For more information check our 2019 grant report, 2020 grant report, 2021 grant report and Commons project Page.
This year to expand the scope of the campaign, we will endeavor to collaborate with around 20+ affiliates to organize the campaign locally like Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth.
A concurrent writing contest, Feminism and Folklore is organized on Wikipedia to improve the coverage of women in folklore and intangible heritage and folk culture of different regions, including folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folklore, and tradition, including ballads, folktales, fairy tales, legends, traditional song and dance, folk plays, games, seasonal events, calendar customs, folk arts, folk religion, mythology, etc. The campaign is targeted at protecting the world’s intangible cultural heritage. In the 2020 and 2021 edition, content about women in folklore and mythology has been created in 18 different languages covering the regional personalities and mythology with over 8900+ articles.
Feminism and Folklore provides an opportunity for the local folklore enthusiasts and conservationists to document their local rituals, folk cultural activities, and songs improving the coverage on various cultures and new forms of heritage that haven’t otherwise been documented so far

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

The communication team will do the outreach to communities via:
  • Mass message on community village pumps and Affiliate talk pages
  • Email the official email address of the Affiliates and their contact person where applicable
  • Wiki loves folklore telegram channel and group
  • Wiki loves folklore mailing list for coordinators
We also continue our previous year's efforts of coordination with the local chapters and the regional user groups to expand the network of partnerships with better synchronization like Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth. With the focused work this year, we wish to establish partnerships with different local partners who can coordinate this locally.

3. How will you let participants know about the contest? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

  • We will be running Centralnotice for Logged in and Anonymous users.
  • We will be sending mass mails/talk page messages to users who have participated earlier in the previous contests.
  • Massmessage on all wikimedia community village pumps.

4. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Note: Grantees, judges, and other contest leaders are ineligible to receive prizes. Grantees who are serving as judges may not receive gifts through grant funding.

Volunteer juries from the respective communities, Wikimedia Commons admins, and professional photographers – will judge the photographs and select winners. For writing contests, apart from the local language jury, we will have team of photo experts.

5. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

We plan to run an illustration campaign after the photography contest is over later in June. Till then, we will also work on designing some interesting sub-campaigns that invite the broader commons community to take part in the categorization and nomination of quality and valued images.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

The contest is being organized online.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

We have diversity and inclusivity at heart and will recall that in our communications. Additionally, this project will cover important gaps of indigenous knowledge that are being left out. It will allow people an opportunity to collect, document, and make that knowledge freely available with free licenses that can be used for education and research later.
