Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

We were warm hearted and full of enthusiasm because we exceeded our goals. Spanning from the pre-campaign, securing fruitful collaboration with other groups with similar interests and advocacy that brought together 25 newbies and 10 experienced advocates in the space of environment and Human rights both virtual and in-person.

Editors who were newly recruited were from human rights institutions and environmental advocates who contributed enormously to topics on Human rights, institutions and climate topics, healthy natural systems. The wow factor came as a result of an increase in translated articles in the local language especially Hausa on both english Wikipedia and Wikidata items.

That notwithstanding, skills were increased for existing editors were they acquired knowledge in advancing Wikimedia through wikidata, about 5% of existing editors knew little or no information on contributing to Wikidata, at the end of the campaign there was an upsurge of contribution and knowledge filling using for all participants to improve upon Wikidata. Also, an increase with images on the topic with 676 as total results.

One Training, One edit-a-thon & a 14 days writing contest	One Training One edit-a-thon Two online training 14 days writing contest	One training and one edit-thon was organized both in person and online.It also included 3 separate weeks of engagement hours purposely to assist those who needed more training. An additional virtual training was add to support editors who heard about the campaign during the contest and were in remote areas. A writing contest was launched for a 14 days challenge to encourage the creation and improvement of articles on Wikidata, wikicommons, Tw wikipedia and Hausa respectively.

15 new editors	30 new editors	These newbies were well represented in all phases of the campaign, were 20 of them participated in the writing contest and 15 attended both physical events.
80 articles created or improved	332 articles were created and over 949 improved	This also saw an increase in uploads 676 on commons with about 85% related to environment sand human rights topics such as people, places, institutions and culture + healthy foods of interest. Over 300 articles were improved on Wikidata as well as the Hausa language Wikipedia.

• What worked well?

It was amazing to have participants from Lebanon and Nigeria contributing to the campaign. This only proves that the campaign publicity and social media campaign went global. The hausa wikipedia also saw an upsurge on article translations both on Wikipedia and WikiData. Our diverse engagement on social media via our collaborators was great. Youth opportunity Ghana, Global Platform Ghana, CitiFm and Joy Aid Foundation fully engaged their network to support the campaign. In general, Global Platform Ghana, Amnesty International, Human Rights Ghana- resource kit, Joy Aid Foundation and Youth Opportunities Ghana helped us win diverse audiences.

• What did not work so well?

This year, we had little language contributions especially on the Twi Wikipedia. Although we had many participants interested in joining the campaign, we had little space to accommodate them physically due to Covid19 restrictions. Some newbies who joined virtually and were not tech savvys had some slight challenges using their devices to edit.

• What would you do differently next time?

We intend to organise trainings for twi linguists to help decolonize the internet through languages. There was not many editors in this phase of the contest so we hope to increase awareness for the linguists.

It has been a great learning and sharing moment for the team because we had the opportunity to clear myths about Wikipedia and we are glad to have met a high number of newbies who acquired valuable facts to churn their interest to improve or contribute to Wikimedia projects. We hope to expand our reach of audience to groups in rural areas because the knowledge movement has still not reached all. We look forward to increasing awareness on SDG related topics in Ghana.

Summary of feedback from participants: About how valuable an opportunity to learn about the benefits of Wikipedia and its sister projects. It also brought to bare the need to create more awareness to reach many diverse advocates of similar interest. This sort of campaign should be organised frequently.
