Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
Yes! We hosted our university's first editathon ever. It took place after classes were over, so we were quite happy to have 19 people showing up and at least 2 participating online. The support of the Wikimedia Foundation meant a lot, as it is not common in our institution to obtain this type of grant.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
3 events 3 events (training session, talk about openness and editathon) Some materials and info (in Spanish) of the sessions are openly available, including help sheets for participants, slides for the talk and a review of the editathon.
20+ participants 21 participants We had 27 registered participants. Nineteen showed up at the edithaton and two reported contributing online.
20+ new editors 21 editors Some of these editors might have not been new. Some already had Wikipedia accounts.
20+ articles created or improved 20+ articles created or improved We sent a follow-up survey. Some participants reported contributing to more than one article. Topics related to psychology. Articles were in Spanish.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • What did not work so well?
  • What would you do differently next time?

Inviting researchers and graduate students to participate in the editathon was a great way of empowering knowledgeable people. Most of them were experts in their topics but new to Wikipedia. Some reported that selecting an article to contribute to was a challenge, as they could identify many different topics they could help with. Survey respondents agreed to contribute to Wikipedia again during the Open Education Week (March 2018). We will send them an email reminder.

We had some problems with the internet connection. We foresaw that this could happen, sought IT support and bought a wifi repeater. However, it was not enough. Participants were quite patient.

Some participants struggled with the editing of Wikipedia. We had help sheets and staff available. But it would be useful to find additional ways of of supporting editors, perhaps FAQs addressing common issues that arose during this editathon.

Anything else

[edit]

Anything else you want to share about your project? An intangible benefit of this event was helping people realise that they too can contribute to Wikipedia, that they have something worthy of sharing.
