Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

I believe we met the goals of the event for what we could do that day. We have about 20-22 people attend 12 of which logged their edits that day (three or so made edits after the event and some people had to propose edits to the pages as they were pages associated with high rates of vandalism). We had 2 members of our school's Professional Development team attend to expand their knowledge of Wikipedia. The general sentiment of the event was that it was positive. I honestly expected more people, but that day there was flash flooding which caused our school (shortly after the event ended) to close down and the nearby areas were completely innodated in flood water up to hip high. I was happy we were even able to have anyone attend the event.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
20-25 Attendees 22 We had a good turn out, it was a little less than hoped for, but there was flash flooding that people were evacuating from that day (which a few people cited to me as a good reason why they were concerned to attend the event).
20 new editors We had about 14-15. As mentioned above, mother nature got in the way.
Number of articles created or improved 20 We had about 14-15. As mentioned above, mother nature got in the way. That being said, a lot of the edit were accepted which was great!

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • What did not work so well?
  • What would you do differently next time?
  • This second time around, we had a smother set up for the venue and buy-in from the school as there was talk that Wikipedia has been investing in events now with AB-Tech. Our entire department learned about what my initiatives are for this area and some are interested in participating in the future with some of their classes.
  • There was obviously the issue of the school closing down right after our event ended, and there was some confusion as to the promotion of the event on which day (which was only fixed the day before the event). Otherwise, it went pretty smoothly.
  • I honestly think we are getting the hang of it, I would have liked to see more people attend, but event attendance is always tricky. I also tried to base this event proportionally on the last event's budget. That was a mistake, it caused me to come really close on my budget. I think I should have given myself some wiggle room next time as I came RIGHT in on the budget.

Finances

[edit]

Grant funds spent

[edit]

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on.

Catering: $494.97 Hotel: $ $243.18 Travel: $ 356.18 Drinks/refreshments: $11

Remaining funds

[edit]

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

I have no remaining funds, I actually overspent on my end by $5 but that's fine, we had a great event and this does so much for Holocaust survivors and expanding Wikipedia in Western NC.

Anything else

[edit]

Anything else you want to share about your project?

Here is a picture I took during the event, a few people already left by that point, but a lot of people stayed towards the end to learn more about Wikipedia and share their edits with their friends on Social Media. I'm really excited that we added almost 2k words edited.

This was Western NC's second edit a thon expanding the history of the Holocaust.
