Grants:Project/Rapid/WMGUG/Africa Open Data Conference
Project Goal
[edit]Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high-quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".
Wikipedia and Wikidata workshops as part of the second Africa Open Data Conference will be held in Accra between July 17 – 21, 2017.
- The main workshop will take place on Saturday, July 1 (pre-conference) which will be about Wikidata. Participants will receive training about contributing to Wikidata after which they'll be in the position to improve Accra (Q3761) - the proposed item theme for the conference.
- The Wikipedia edit-a-thon will take place on Monday, July 17 to improve general Wikipedia content. The session will provide an opportunity to retrain returning editors as well as recruit new comers.
- Station a Wikimedia booth at the conference to allow people to come and learn more about the community and how to get involved.
The goals of these sessions and the project as a whole are to:
- Provide training on Wikipedia and Wikidata
- Add content to Wikipedia and Wikidata
- Recruit new editors and retrain returnees
- Form new collaborations, and create awareness to Wikimedia in the open data community

- Wikimedia Ghana User Group members have been informed of workshops via the mailing list wikimedia-gh@lists.wikimedia.org and our community's Whatsapp group.
- The sessions on Wikipedia and Wikidata will be RSVP'd for, on main conference website once all is confirmed.
- Days ahead of event, we will use social media to invite people to join our sessions.
What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
- All participants will be given the opportunity to join the user group. Within the user group, participants get to be part of the events and the discussions we have, get news from the global community we share, and they get access to experienced editors to teach them or answer their questions.

Endorsements
[edit]- This will help us the user group in Ghana Here to increase our membership base hence more edits to Wikimedia. It's a Yes from me and I would personally be present for the workshops all things been equal. Jaward (talk) 06:44, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
- This is a great opportunity for Wikimedia Ghana UG to join the open data and access to information dialog in Africa. The list of partners for this conference is very impressive: Data Collaborative for Local Impact (MCC), IDRC, Open Knowledge International, and much more including 32 countries, 600 participants. I have been speaking with the organizer of this event and there is a huge demand for Wikimedia Ghana to be present and participate. I am also working on confirming WMF representation on a panel. I endorse this fully. Jrabah (talk) 09:32, 2 July (UTC)
- I fully endorse this, looking at the audience of the conference, it's a great avenue to preach WMF mission. Afterwall WikiData is Open Data; personally glad about the WikiData session. Enock4seth (talk) 13:53, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

- I am in high support of this initiative, WikiData training is important because it fulfills the goal of the Open society in diverse ways. It will also help improve information gaps with regards to migration of Wikipedia articles onto WikiData. However, i strongly endorse with all thumbs, Ghana is ready to do more.Joy Agyepong (talk) 08:07, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

And also it will improve the editing skills of old members and we outside Accra too this is an opportunity for us to learn how to edit so that we can contribute significantly to Wikipedia.
