Project Goal

[edit]

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high-quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

Wikipedia and Wikidata workshops as part of the second Africa Open Data Conference will be held in Accra between July 17 – 21, 2017.

  • The main workshop will take place on Saturday, July 1 (pre-conference) which will be about Wikidata. Participants will receive training about contributing to Wikidata after which they'll be in the position to improve Accra (Q3761) - the proposed item theme for the conference.
  • The Wikipedia edit-a-thon will take place on Monday, July 17 to improve general Wikipedia content. The session will provide an opportunity to retrain returning editors as well as recruit new comers.
  • Station a Wikimedia booth at the conference to allow people to come and learn more about the community and how to get involved.

The goals of these sessions and the project as a whole are to:

  1. Provide training on Wikipedia and Wikidata
  2. Add content to Wikipedia and Wikidata
  3. Recruit new editors and retrain returnees
  4. Form new collaborations, and create awareness to Wikimedia in the open data community

  • This is a great opportunity for Wikimedia Ghana UG to join the open data and access to information dialog in Africa. The list of partners for this conference is very impressive: Data Collaborative for Local Impact (MCC), IDRC, Open Knowledge International, and much more including 32 countries, 600 participants. I have been speaking with the organizer of this event and there is a huge demand for Wikimedia Ghana to be present and participate. I am also working on confirming WMF representation on a panel. I endorse this fully. Jrabah (talk) 09:32, 2 July (UTC)
