Project Goal
[edit]- Add and improve content
- Recruit new editors
- Engage existing editors
Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?
- We will focus on improving the quality and the quantity of pictures about natural protected areas of Canada during the Wiki Loves Earth contest. This content is important since the majority of Canadian protected areas do not have quality pictures or even have no pictures at all to illustrate Wikipedia articles.
2. How will you let people know about the contest?
- The contest will benefit from the publicity of the international team organizing Wiki Loves Earth. It will also be publicized on Wikimedia Canada's website and social networks. Also, 2017 is the 150th Anniversary of the Canadian Confederation and the Canadian Government has given free admission to all national parks of Canada for the duration of the year. So it is a great opportunity to implement Wiki Loves Earth in Canada this year.
3. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
- A Canadian jury will be formed with recognized photo-journalists. A list of criteria has been established and is available on Wikimedia Canada's website.
4. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?
- We will use a special upload wizard on Commons for the contest that will automatically add categories to the uploaded pictures. This will allow Wikipedia contributors to easily use the images on Wikipedia articles. One of the judging criteria is the "usefulness" of the pictures for the Wikimedia projects.
5. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- The organizing team is working closely with the organizer of the three editions of Wiki Loves Monuments that have been run in Canada to get all lessons learned. It is also getting regular feedback from the international Wiki Loves Earth team.
Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:
For photo contests:
- at least 50 participants uploading one or more picture
- at least 200 pictures uploaded
- at least 30 Wikipedia articles illustrated with the uploaded pictures
Note: Since this is the first year that we are implementing WLE competition, the metrics mentioned above are hard estimation and also based on our expectations.
Resources
[edit]What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
Organizing team
[edit]- Jean-Philippe Béland (Amqui), Vice President of Wikimedia Canada, leading the team
- Philip Kopetzky, creating lists in English, creating the campaign on Wikimedia Commons, and helping to find sponsors
- François Lambert, creating lists in French, and ensuring all items exist in Wikidata with proper IDs
- Benoit Rochon, President of Wikimedia Canada, organizer of Wiki Loves Monuments in Canada, coordinating the jury
Other resources
[edit]What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
What we already have:
- Volunteers running the organization of the contest
- Volunteers running the press relations and publicity for the contest
- Contest information hosted on Wikimedia Canada's website
- Jury formed of professional photo-journalists (giving their time freely)
- Subsidized gift cards from sponsors (i.e. we pay only a percentage of the face value of the card) for prizes
The Organizing team have planned to have the following gifts for the winners of this contest:
- Full scholarship to attend Wikimania in Montreal. It is the first time the Wikimania is in Canada, so it is a great oportunity to bring the winner there. For budetting purposed, we received from Ellie Young that registration cost should be around 225 USD or 300 CAD. She told us that the hotel at the venue would be 1,100 CAD for 6 nights, but can be reduced to 550 CAD if splitted by two, which is the intent for this schorlarship. Our intent is to have this room splitted wih another volunteer from Wikimania Canada. Travel cost is an estimated cost to cover travel almost anywhere from Canada. Depending from where the winner is from, the most economical way of transport will obviously be used and the remaining of the funds returned at the end of the grant. In the unlikely event that the winner is from a remote Canadian location, we will definitly still want to offer him or her the chance to participate in Wikimania and will assess how to cover the extra cost then.
- Second and third best pictures will win gift cards for photographic equipment. Given the immensity of the Canadian territoiry, it has been decided that it is most practicable for everybody involved to have gift cards redeemable online anywhere in Canada as prizes. Plus, we will get subsidized cost for those gift cards from sponsors as mentioned above.
- A third gift cart will be given to a randomly selected participant from all the participants that didn't already win something, but submitted at least one picture that was deemed to be useful as part of the contest.
Note: In the event that the winner can't or doesn't want to attend Wikimania, the scholarship will be offered to the second, then third.
