Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Monastery of Rousanou, Meteora, Greece by Alexis Alexandris,
1st place in WLM Greece
2nd place in WLM International

All of the project's goals were reached. This also includes improving the quality of the already existing articles related to the pictures. Also many monuments in Greece were covered for first time with photos from the competition. Generally we succeeded in increasing the number of freely licensed images of Greek monuments, in raising awareness of historical heritage through the photographs uploaded during the competition, and improving the quality of the content on Wikimedia projects by providing images to existing articles. We noticed that some articles were created following the existance of images. More items were included in the Monuments list and were synchronized with Wikidata.

It must me noted that the quarantine did not allow people to visit any monuments during the contest period, so the participation was just enough to reach our goals, but not exceed them by far.

From the organizational side, the project run very good. We replaced some members of the jury with GLAM people more relevant to the subject. All parts of the schedule were met.

We also succeeded in raising awareness of free licences among photographers in Greece and recruited some of them as new contributors to Wikimedia Commons. We also increased local media coverage about Wikimedia projects through national news outlets. We raised even more coverage when the photo which winned the 1st place in WLM Greece then got the 2nd place in the international WLM.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • Jury process worked well.
    • We have found some sponsors and supporters to help us.
  • What did not work so well? prizes
    • Participation was just not "great". The increase of the level of prizes did not have the impact on the number of photos, we would have expected, but it may be the result of the quarantine during the contest period.
  • What would you do differently next time?
    • Keep the schedule.
