Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Some of the project's goals were exceeded. This also includes improving the quality of the already existing articles related to the pictures. Also many monuments in Greece were covered for first time with photos from the competition. Generally we succeeded in increasing the number of freely licensed images of Greek monuments, in raising awareness of historical heritage through the photographs uploaded during the competition, and improving the quality of the content on Wikimedia projects by providing images to existing articles. It is obvious that more images will be used in the future, since a large number of them was not used only because there was no article about that monument.

In 2017 we have photos from 231 monuments. Out of them 123 monuments were not photographed in 2016, thus we have really succeeded in increasing the number of freely licensed images of Greek monuments.

We also succeeded in raising awareness of free licences among photographers in Greece (at least for those who participated) and recruited some of them as new contributors to Wikimedia Commons. We also increased local media coverage about Wikimedia projects through national news outlets.

Some of the quantitative project's goals were not covered. We had less participants and thus less photos. There is a suspicion (also in other countries) that the CentraNotice did not work properly and banners were not displayed for many days.

Monuments list was transfered from tables and geodatabases to Wikidata, so that we now have a good overview of them, and through this we enriched Wikidata itself. [1]

From the organizational side, the project run smoothly based on last years experience and more people on board.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • Uploading, jury process, and awards ceremony worked well.
    • Monuments list was transfered from tables to Wikidata, so that we now have a good overview of them, and also enriched Wikidata itself!
  • What did not work so well?
    • Suspicion that the CentraNotice was not displayed frequently
  • What would you do differently next time?
    • We will communicate with more photography organizations or groups to promote and engage more photographers.
