Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

The online editathon Wiki Loves EU 2019 was organised this year in Greece -for the very first time-, in the context of Europe Day. The editathon lasted only 9 days (1-9 May 2019), and according to the achieved outcomes and the feedback we got from the participants during the award ceremony, we consider it a successful project.

Greek Wikipedia was lacking important articles related to the history and the main institutions of the European Union, and fortunately, with the help of the participating editors, these articles were created and enriched during the editathon.

Apart from two lists of suggested articles (existing and non-existing ones), we provided the respective articles in English Wikipedia, as well as a list of suggested sources of information for the editors to research and learn about the European Union. This kind of support that we provided proved really helpful, since the participants created and enriched all the new articles that we suggested in such a short period of time.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of participants: 20-30 participants 5 participants It seems that the duration of the editathon was not long enough for more editors to get involved. Also, it seems that when there are a few editors that are more motivated and active than others, other editors get discouraged and do not participate.
Number of new editors: 10 new editors The editathon took place online. And although we communicated the Wikipedia notebook on how to write Wikipedia articles via social media, it seems that this wasn’t enough. We should have organised a live Wikipedia seminar beforehand, and we should have foreseen at least one day of live article writing / editing.
Number of of articles created or improved: 20 articles 36 new articles and major expansion of 5 existing articles Apart from two lists of suggested articles (existing and non-existing ones), we provided the respective articles in English Wikipedia, as well as a list of suggested sources of information for the editors to research and learn about the European Union.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

What worked well?

The editathon was organised and implemented by Inter Alia (not-for-profit civic organisation), GLAM Hack (initiative aiming at the promotion of digital cultural heritage) and Wikimedia Community User Group Greece, in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Athen. The fact that we were four organisers helped us share the organisational tasks, as well as to disseminate the editathon via many communication channels (websites, social media pages, and Youth Fair 2019).

In addition, by organising the award ceremony, we had the opportunity to meet in person the winners and members of the Wikimedia community in Greece, to discuss about Wikipedia and its sister projects, as well as to present the idea that led us to the organisation of this editathon.

What did not work so well?

We didn’t manage to engage many existing editors, nor to recruit new ones.

What would you do differently next time?

We would organise the online editathon for a longer period of time. Also, we would organise a live Wikipedia seminar, as well as a live editathon in order to engage more editors and to recruit new ones.

[edit]

Anything else you want to share about your project?

Our aspiration is to organise this editathon annually and in collaboration with other partners (not-for-profit civic organisations and Wikimedia communities) from all over Europe.
