Grants:Project/Rapid/UG BAQ/Publication of wikibook from wikiproject
Please see the sample Editathon/Training application before drafting your application.
Project Goal
[edit]The goals of the project are to:
- Add or improve content.
The Park of Nurseries of Ulia lies at the neighbourhood of Ulía in Donostia-San Sebastián (Basque Country).
Thanks to the wikiproject UliakoLorebaratzak since 2015-11-27 more than 80 articles about the trees and birds in the park have been created in the Basque Wikipedia, and over 100 pictures of all the different trees in the park have been uploaded to Commons) - Increase skills for existing editors.
3 editors participating in this wikiproject learnt about uploading multiple pictures to Commons, organizing an edit-a-thon (2016-05-28), using QRpedia, and now they are learning how to create a wikibook.
We intend to publish a full interactive wikibook containing the 83 articles created and/or improved in the Basque Wikipedia. A first version of this book was created on 25 March 2016 by means of Pediapress). The 330 pages of this book look nice; the book is a good image of Wikimedia contents; it physically visualizes the rich contents created; even people who are not regular internet users after showing the book they realize the book is a nice contribution to our society. However, the enriched color required for the wikibook is expensive in our country (43.09€ including the cheapest shipping option). On our scheduled second version due for publishing, we would like to hand over in appreciation 10 copies of the book to editors and collaborators that contributed greatly to the wikiproject, and other 20 copies to disseminate our work among other very promising partners (there are 49 parks in the same city and similar 28 big city parks in Basque Country), - Recruit new editors.
Two new editors were involved in our wikiproject.
We think that the quality of this book will be instrumental in inspiring other Basque amateurs and professionals, such as librarians, students, botanists, town and/or city residents with a commitment to the community's well-being, to start new similar wikiprojects, as well as providing the means to engage them to the Basque WP, either by editing, or by joining outreach activities. The book will define a feasible model, a feasible reference for new works. - Provide a window showcasing the outcome of collaboration between community and Wikimedia, as well as inspiration towards similar topic-specific, cooperative projects with Wikimedia in educative, civic and community environments, benefiting and contributing to reinforce both of them.
- Generate new ideas related to the use of QR codes to bridge the physical and the virtual world represented by QRpedia.
Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project.
- Identify the changes required for the second version. For the moment, the following have been identified:
- Include the article Uliako Baratzak on the wikiproject as the 4th point in the introductory chapter, since it was the seminal project leading to this book.
- There are two links to Wikipedia articles ("Mika" and "Txepetx") that lead not to the article of a tree or bird, but to a disambiguation page, because
- Content text in the articles of ten birds is too short; we plan o enrich them.
- Include the article Uliako Baratzak on the wikiproject as the 4th point in the introductory chapter, since it was the seminal project leading to this book.
- Consider alternative and possible cheaper ways to print the wikibooks.
- Use social media accounts of Wikimedia chapter organizations to showcase the project (Basque Wikimedia).
- Post-process, add information to Wikidata and upload the missing photographs of two trees.
- Try to get the pdf file and then print it with a local publisher; it would be cheaper if the book is printed here in the Basque Country.
- Publication of the hard copies of the book.
- Public presentation of the wikibook.
- Dissemination of the book and the procedure to publish it.
- Write a report and present the results both on the Basque Wikimedians' User Group resource in Meta, and on their website.
Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- No. We did it in May 2016
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions. their
- Announcement and invitation to the presentation of the book at Basque_Wikimedians_User_Group, at the websites of the two associations that manage the park (Association of Ulia Neighbors and Lorebaratzak), as well as their Twitter accounts (@euwikipedia, @uliatarrak, @UliakoMintegiak, @kepasarasola, @xabiercanas, @aitzolete...); also, at the BWUG's website, and Basque Wikipedia's Facebook.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- Yes, Basque Wikimedians User Group and its members support this initiative.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Yes, Basque Wikimedians User Group supports this initiative.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- We envisage the possibility of promoting the publication of a few like-minded wikibooks in 2018.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- If we were able to locally print copies in a cheaper way we would publish more copies. We think that publishing 30 copies will be a reasonable amount of copies to distribute among relevant agents that will contribute to expand the book, its content, the project's idea, and attention to Wikimedia as a helpful dissemination and educative resource. 14 public libraries from our city have asked us for a copy of this book by now.
Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- As far as we know, this is the first time a public park has been chosen in a wikiproject to systematically complement Wikipedia contents by creating articles for all its trees and birds, and more than 100 photographs taken in the park have been published in Commons; it is the first time so many QRs from QRpedia have been located in a park, and a QR path allows to identify the trees and their position in the park.
- The wikibook we want to publish will be useful to physically visualize our new contributions to other social agents, and to be used as an example in the definition of wikiprojects, applicable to other parks as well as to other sites of interest.
- The impact will be broadly measured by new collaborative dynamics established with related institutions, such as libraries, resident associations, or university, like-minded initiatives in the short and mid-run, by means of the increase in the number of EU WP edits, as well as new recruits and participants in the Basque Wikipedians User Group's events.
- Number of events : 2 presentations of the book
- Number of participants : 1 participant + community involvement
- Number of new editors : two
- Number of articles created or improved : 80.
- Number of repeating participants (for projects that include a series of events): None
Resources
[edit]What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- Support from Basque Wikimedia; it will complete the contents of the book, and will manage the printing process.
- Support from the association that manages the park (Association of Ulia Neighbors; it was the organization that promoted the creation of the wikiproject in collaboration with Basque Wikimedia and the Committee of the European Cultural Capital in Donostia-2016.
- Support from other associations that collaborated to create the catalogue of trees and birds in the park, and to organize the edit-a-thon in May 2016 Lorebaratzak and SEO-Birds Donostia)
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- We look for a $1300 grant to fund the publication of 24 copies of this wikibook. We would use the 24 copies as follows:
- 14 copies to be directed at public libraries from our city that have asked us for it by now.
- 10 copies to hand them over as an appreciation to 10 editors and collaborators that contributed greatly to the wikiproject.
- Starting out from the price of the first version of the book, the total prize is €1034.16 (= €43.09 * 24 = $1221.76). After finishing and enriching some of the articles in the book, we estimate the total amount could be slightly higher, but always less than €1100 or $1300.
