Goals
[edit]Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
For the most I met the goals and I'm happy with how the project went.
There's an increase of quality content of Commons, Wikidata and language projects. There are more articles illustrated by high quality images. Norwegian bands and artist in particular have now had images added to the articles. This project has replaced several articles that had poor quality (typically legacy mobile phone photographs, blurry photographs or photographs taken of a group of people to illustrate an single artist article). The project has taken care in making sure female subjects are not under-represented through planning, photographing and using images. Images has also been added to artist's entry at Wikidata so they will automatically be included in future articles.
Through this project Wikimedia Norway has increased the contact with organisers of concerts. This can be helpful for future events and projects.
Outcome
[edit]Please report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
an increase of donated, free images of musical artists | Totally 355 photographs made and donated (259 images from Stavernfestivalen, 96 images from Q25 Jubileumsfesten) | This is in the range of the expected result. |
more Wikipedia articles will be illustrated by high quality portraits | 77 distinct images used 337 times in 53 wiki-projects (languages) | This is in the range of the expected result. The photographer has himself contributed much to the use of the images in wiki-projects. |
more articles of female subjects will be illustrated | In Q25 100%, and at Stavernfestivalen 91% of the concerts with mixed or female artists were photographed. | Although it's complicated to measure the exact gender ratio in articles the result shows that most concerts with female artists where photographed (all but one). In order to measure the use of images in articles and reporting on gender would need more resources to analyse the articles and photographs. |
Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
- Planning and executing the project went well
- Cooperation with the festival was good
- Including a goal to reduce the gender gap increased the awareness for under representation of female artists
- What did not work so well?
- Involvement of community can be improved
- Post processing of metadata (file name, caption, categories) was more labour intensive and took longer time than expected and planned
- What would you do differently next time?
- Start the process earlier, including apply for grants earlier
- Engage the community in planning (like picking festivals and concerts that have interest in the community)
- Consider how the community can be involved in adding metadata to the photographs
- Consider teaming up with local Wikimedia organisations and use the project as an opportunity for interaction and profiling Wikimedia on social media
- Allow more project time for uploading the result. It's quite possible that 2-4 months per festival is needed (one month per festival day).
Considering everything it has been a good experience running this project. It may very well be repeated in some form in the future.
Finances
[edit]Grant funds spent
[edit]Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on. For Stavernfestivalen: Three daily return trips from Oslo to Stavern (approximately 310 kilometers each day, total 930 km)
Car rental: NOK 1931 (NOK 2000) Petrol: NOK 754 (NOK 600) Toll: NOK 372 (NOK 450) Parking: NOK 280 (NOK 0)

Budget in parenthesis
Remaining funds
[edit]Do you have any remaining grant funds? NOK 176 (approximatly USD 18) are left in the budget. I would like this to be used for similar projects in the future.
Anything else
[edit]Anything else you want to share about your project? The following posts were made at project's bulletin boards, enticing involvement and comments from contributors in Scandinavia:
- Norway bokmål: Bilder_fra_musikkfestivaler (July 2016)
- Sweden: [[1]] (August 2016)
- Denmark: [fra koncerter og festivaller i Norge] (August 2016)
There was some posts at the Norwegian project, requesting help to identify artists (like this one)
