1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

This contest moves from the Wiki4MediaFreedom initiative and wants to capitalize on it. Within this initiative, and thanks to the initial work a Wikipedian in Residence at Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa (OBCT), dozens of quality articles on media freedom-related topics have been created and updated in English, focussing in particular on topics like transparency of media ownership; media concentration; access to public information; censorship and self-censorship, with a set of country entries developed for each of them.

The Wiki4MediaFreedom editorial effort has focussed on media landscapes and other media freedom-related issues in South-east Europe, the Eastern Partnership countries, Turkey, as well as Visegrád countries, and Baltic States. Many of these articles only exist in the English Wikipedia, and have not a related entries in the languages concerned. The recent killings of independent journalists in Europe showed that media freedom is under attack all over Europe, including in consolidated democracies which are member of the European Union.

It is time to further share the knowledge produced so far with the wider Wikipedia community and stimulate societal engagement at local level to increase the ownership of Wiki4MediaFreedom in several languages across Europe: that’s why on the World Press Freedom Day we will launch the Wiki4MediaFreedom Writing & Translation Contest to invite the community to contribute and join the Wiki4MediaFreedom initiative in support of media freedom, pluralism and quality journalism in Europe and beyond.

2. How will you let people know about the contest?

Within the Wiki4MediaFreedom initiative we have already consolidated several relationships with the Wikimedia and Wikipedia community, for instance by running two Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thons (the first in Belgrade in 2016; the second in Sofia in 2017). All these networks, including Wikimedia national chapters and user groups, as well as media freedom organisations and associations of journalists will be engaged again for the Contest. A dedicated page on Meta has been created. The contest will be widely promoted on social media, including via the Facebook groups "Central and Eastern European Wikipedia Community" and "Wikipedia Weekly". Moreover, a news will be published on the portal of OBC Transeuropa in Italian and English. Partners from all over Europe of the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, will also support the dissemination and promotion of Contest.

3. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?

A jury, composed of experts in the field of media freedom and Wikipedians, will review the articles translated, improved and updated and award prizes to the winners. The jury will include researchers and curators of the Media Freedom Resource Centre, an online open online platform that facilitates quick and systematic access to an ever-growing collection of resources on media freedom and pluralism in Europe. The jury will also include the multilingual network of translators and local correspondents of OBCT.

Contest participants will be responsible for tracking their work on the main contest page in META. They will list each article they have worked on. We are using a simple scoring system: one point will be given for each 1,000 bytes improved and translated. 3 points will be given for every new source added. The addition of local quality source will be positively evaluated.

Prizes will be given for the two categories, i.e. Translation and improving/updating content, to the top three scorers. Prizes are online gift voucher, so delivery should not be a problem.

This is intended to be the first edition of the Wiki4MediaFreedom Writing & Translation contest that we want symbolically launch on May 3, 2018, i.e. the World Press Freedom Day, along with other initiatives that will be carried out worldwide. We are planning to launch a second edition of the Contest on September 28, the Access to Information Day, to which we will apply the lessons learned in organising this first edition. Also, in the second semester of 2018, we will launch other two Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thons in two different European countries.

Resources

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

The Contest will be managed by Rossella Vignola: Wikipedian since 2015, she contributes content on media freedom related issues since 2015, after a training received by a Wikipedian in Residence hosted at OBCT. She has organised the Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thons held in Belgrade in November 2016 and in Sofia in November 2017. Together with other volunteers involved in the local solidarity network with refugees in Trentino, she launched the Wikipedia4Refugees initiative. Rossella will be the Contest organizer, will create contest pages, answer questions on email and contest talk page, check scores, and the like.

She will be supported by other member of OBCT's staff in the promotion of Contest, and purchasing of prizes. Experts and local correspondens of the network of OBCT as well as the researchers and curators of the Media Freedom Resource Centre will evaluate the articles translated and improved, with the help of expert wikipedians.
