Grants:Project/Rapid/Rainy Season Insects Photography Sessions

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
statusnot funded
CMusonda/Rainy Season Insect Photography Sessions
I would like to run a project as we start the rainy season to photograph as many insects as possible that emerge during the rainy season and submit them to Wikimedia commons. I would also like to train a small number of the youths in community about the importance of insects in the ecosystem and promote sensitivity to co-living with them by encouraging photo-documenting them and sharing such content on Wikimedia commons.

Project Goal

[edit]

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

My goal is to sensitive people (especially the youth) in the community about the importance of insects in our ecosystem by encouraging photographing documenting them and freely sharing such content. My hope is that this will heighten their sensitivity to their existence, importance and introduce them to Wikimedia.

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

We will spend a greater part of our time taking as many photographs of different kinds of insects as we can during the season. We shall also spend a part of the time uploading the images to Wikimedia Commons. And a small amount of time reviewing our experiences, sharing challenges faced and lessons learned.

Planning and guidance for the series of events will be provided before the the project.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

I have posted about the project calling for participants on my Facebook personal page and a local Facebook group. I have also put up posters around the community near where I stay.

I have decided to target especially the youth living in my community because I would like to introduce them to nature photography and Wikimedia Foundation goals and how they can be part of it. Many are not aware that they have access to nature that they can photo-document and share with others. This experience I am hoping will be empowering to them.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

I hope that by the end of the rainy season we would have photographed countless insects and identified new and seldom known insects in our community. And we would have uploaded high quality photographs to Wikimedia.

Participants will have had the experience of using one of Wikimedia Foundations projects, Wikimedia commons, and be familiar with how they can contribute to Wikimedia projects

I will make weekly feedback calls on participants on their activities and progress.

Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Yes - but for less than 10 people. The in-person sessions will be to provide guidance on the project, perhaps to offer technical assistance (internet, uploading issues, etc) during the project period and for the formal project close meeting.

We’ll ensure adherence to the ministry of health’s guidelines on COVID-19.

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  1. If the total number of participants reaches 10 and each contributes at least 30 high quality pictures
  2. If at least 350 photos are uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
  3. If each participant has created his own account on Wikimedia and is able to upload photos.
  4. If at least 10 more community members show interest and register to participate in future similar projects (following season preferably).
