Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Wiki for Human Rights New Mexico is an event/project that seeks to host workshops to introduce Wikipedia and create awareness about the Wiki for Human Rights Campaign to undergraduate students in the state of New Mexico. This is a 2-day workshop that will bring together about 25 students to achieve one main goal. With the State of New Mexico, US fraught with various environmental issues including climate challenges that affect water resources among several others, this event will serve as an opportunity to introduce the Wikimedia movement to students and activists to discuss and share ideas on how they can employ Wikipedia to address these challenges confronting the state while documenting fact-based content on these issues. New Mexico has no Wikipedia presence (as far as I know) and this serves as an opportunity to get students in the area involved. In the course of the project, students contributed content (articles and images) about New Mexico portraying the beautiful forested mountains and wildlife sceneries and at the same time, environmental challenges currently present in the state.

We are particularly impressed about this project and the level of contribution from the students. We held two sessions. The first one, to introduce Wikipedia and related projects to the students and the second, to upload images that depict the environment of New Mexico. We stated three clear goals as part of the grant application and all were met. The goals are as follows:

·       To introduce students and community members to Wikipedia and establish a presence

·      To introduce students to the Wiki for Human Rights campaign and get them thinking about how they can contribute content on human rights and the environment on Wikipedia and other sister projects.

·      To communicate the level of New Mexico Climate challenges that affect water resources and brainstorm on how to correct the anomaly through Wikipedia.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
25 students 38 students joined We targeted 25 students. However, we had 38 students participating in the campaign
50 photos 203 photos We exceeded three times the target for photos for the project

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • What did not work so well?
  • What would you do differently next time?

Both sessions were successful as students showed enthusiasm in learning and contributing.

Students participated fully. For most of them, it was their first time to learn about adding content on Wikipedia and uploading images to Wikimedia Commons.

What didn’t work well? some had their accounts blocked after creating one. This affected participation to some extent. This challenge discouraged some of them since they were new contributors. However, we explained to them the cause and offered help.

Although this project was primarily about photos. Participants also contributed a total of 88 edits to 6 major articles about the environment on Wikipedia.

Anything else

[edit]

Anything else you want to share about your project?

We have learnt a lot from leading this project such as making Wikipedia training fun for students to be able to meet project goals. We hope to make this an annual project involving new students each year. We hope that these images will be a useful resource to complement existing articles about New Mexico’s environment and the world at large.
