Project Goal

- Increase the awareness of volunteer developer opportunities in Africa
- Recruit new volunteer developers from the continent
- Create a community of developers on the continent
- Participate in solving technical problems from the larger community
- Promote participation in continental and international programs that benefit the community (GSoC)
- Ensure participation from Africa in tech related community events such as Hackathon

[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
We will be hosting or conducting trainings in countries across the continent to create awareness about the technical or development aspect of the Wikimedia Movement and build the capacity of participants in areas that they may be lagging yet important to becoming a volunteer developer in the movement.
We hope to achieve this via:
- Awareness creation
- Training and capacity building
- Ensuring a continuous communication to enforce a going concern
The plan was to do this in a host of countries however we have adopted a strategy to try out one (1) country for a period of two (2) months in the pilot phase to closely monitor growth of the campaign and learn from the lapses and areas to be improved. We have carefully selected Ghana to be the first country of host (pilot country), mainly because we are highly equipped with enough resources to closely monitor progress and learn from the fall outs in this pilot phase before finally scaling it to other countries.

- An email will be sent to the Wikimedia Developer Mailing List
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors/developers to lead the event?
We currently have the only African volunteer developer for the Wikimedia Foundation as a member of the team to ensure a success of the program. Also we possess an experience editor from the Ghanaian community and a member of the team who will treating topics such as capacity building and talking about the benefits of volunteering as a developer.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
Our target audience is already existing developers and computer science students. People who have some level of understanding of developing and can easily relate with the subject that will be treated. Mostly these category of people have the prerequisite knowledge and devices needed to enhance our work at the event.
We have partnered a few developer communities who will share this opportunity within their networks and ensure we reach the right audience.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
We will ensure sustainability of this project through the initiation or creation of developer communities in each country we visit. There will also be constant engagement through the mailing list african-wikimedia-developerslists.wikimedia.org and through the leaders of the communities created.

Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Have at least 30 people attend the event
- Recruit a minimum of 20 volunteers
- Maintain a minimum of 5 active developers at the end of the pilot phase
- If 1/2 of the total number of communities in Africa know about us.

NB: The amount requested to be funded under the rapid grant is 1999.76 USD, specifically to cover event logistics. The amount of 1156.83 USD as stated for the travel logistics will be covered by the developers relations team at the WMF.
