Goals
[edit]Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
We are very happy to report that we met our goals for this project. We had 28 Wikipedians, both new and experienced, local and from out-of-town, edit 47 articles and create six brand new articles about notable St. Louis musicans.
Outcome
[edit]Please report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
1 event | 1 event | We planned to have one event, and we did. |
40 participants | 28 participants | We learned after we submitted the grant that the room available to us for the event had a maximum capacity of 30 people, so we had to limit participation in the live event. |
20 new editors | circa 14 | We do not have exact stats for this, but based on observations during the event, at least half the attendees had not used Wikipedia before |
40 articles created or improved | 47 edited, 6 created | We had a very motivated group of new and experienced Wikipedians focused on adding as much quality content as possible. |

Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
What worked well?
- Having training at the beginning of the event while folks ate their lunch worked really well. They were ready to dive into editing once they had finished eating and learning.
- Having people think about topics they wanted to edit before the event and bring research materials with them meant most people spent the majority of the event adding content.
- Partnering with the local public library was highly beneficial because we had access to their collections and space.
- Offering a remote participation option via Zoom for a few attendees who could not be at the event in person
- Having a number of free loaner laptops on hand for users without a machine.
What did not work so well?
- Reaching out to the local Missouri Wikipedian community was very difficult. Luckily, they found us! At the event we learned the local editing community is very small, but they were excited to participate in the event.
What would you do differently next time?
Finances
[edit]Grant funds spent
[edit]Wikipedia branded merchandise for free giveaways - $296.89; Amazon giftcards for prizes - $200; Lunch catering - $479.07
Total spent: $975.96
Remaining funds
[edit]A total of $199.04 was unspent from the grant funds. We had budgeted this amount originally to provide childcare resources for attendees. However, no attendees ultimately required childcare, so this service was not used. Remaining funds have been transferred back to Wikimedia.
Anything else
[edit]Anything else you want to share about your project?
This event went well. It really couldn't have gone better. Now that we know how much interest there is in editing Wikipedia, we plan to hold annual editing events during the Annual Meeting of the Music Library Association. We don't know exactly what these events will look like, but we want to keep the momentum and interest going to keep improving Wikipedia.
In addition to the 47 articles edited and 6 created mentioned above, the event resulted in 260 total edits and 10.3K words added. Two new Wikidata entries were also created.
A meetup page for the event was created and is available here.
The hashtag #mlawiki2019 was used for the event. Images and updates from the event were posted to Twitter using this hashtag.
The event organisers would like to thank our instructors for the day, Anna Kjias and Angela Pratesi and to St.Louis Public Library for hosting us.
