Wikipedia Workshop and meet-up editing session

Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

  • Not satisfied

Not happy because the summit was not conducted successfully, we faced so many challenges and we hope next time we will tackle them up.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

  • New editors were engaged, and trained how to contribute to Wikipedia, some of them are doing well now.
  • The events were not all successful because of some constraints we had faced.
  • We only managed 3 workshops.
  • Increase interest and engage new editors and collaboration/ support from different educational institutions. We managed to seek participation from people in Jwaneng ,thelibrary users and employees.
  • Increase skills for existing editors. We had a problem with existing editors not managing to come for the workshop, some came only on the first day of the town level meet-up, mostly we were affected much by the weather conditions as stated on the grant discussion page.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Increase skills for existing editors Existing editors only availed themselves on the first workshop, and because of constraints like weather conditions people did not show-up as many as I thought they will. We were mostly distracted or disturbed by weather conditions, it was a rainy season, and we experienced heavy rains.
Add or improve content of articles (Both in Setswana and English) The attendees were explained on how to edit Wikipedia and were asked to improve content of articles available and even created new content. We created content which was not available on Wikipedia for instance the Toyota 1000kmdesert race which is held annually, we created stub articles, which we are going to destub during the destub-a-thorn event we are planning. We were not able to write or edit more of articles, instead. We focused on the workshop which includes the introduction to Wikipedia, Wikipedia editing guidelines, uploading photos to Wikimedia commons and an explanation of Wikimedia and its sister projects
Get a boost for outreach activities in Botswana (Jwaneng) Awareness was successfully spread about Wikipedia and its activities.
Number of Workshops 5 Number of Workshops conducted 3 Initially we thought we would have 5 workshops as the plan, but it did not go according to plan. It was a bit difficult due to shortage of funds, bad weather conditions (heavy rainfall) and logistics.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Wikipedia awareness was successful and support from Botho University with projector equipment.

  • What did not work so well?

-As the Workshop was focused on introducing Wikipedia, its activities, the time was taken to introduce or make people understand how they will edit Wikipedia. We faced problems with the internet connection on the meet-up session.
Other editors did not show up at the meeting because we had heavy rainfall during that time and others complained that they didn't have transport money to reach to the meet-up place, as they stay far.
-This made a realization that a new mechanism should be adopted to keep editors engaged.
-The target for w/shop was 5, but only 3 were done.
-We were destructed by weather conditions (rain) as was stated on the grant discussion page, people did not show up as expected.
- The internet connection was very poor, it was on and off.

  • What would you do differently next time?

-I will approach high school students and language teachers (English and Setswana) and drop invitations for them to participate (learn) and help improve content
