Grants:Project/Rapid/Kunokuno/Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos in the Philippines 2021/Report
Goals
[edit]Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
Yes. Aside from being able to invite new editors, I was happy that the previous editors we had in the past are still willing to be part of the existing campaigns.
Outcome
[edit]Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
The main objective of this project is for our local Wikipedia Projects to be involved in this international campaign. Articles will certainly be improved since they will be provided with the right photos supporting the article itself. The accumulated photos that are all available on Wikimedia Commons will find their place in articles located in Wikipedia. A stub article is common in our local Wikipedia, then adding a photo for it is another step of improving those stub articles. | On its initial phase, most of the editors have edited on local Wikipedia but since it overlaps with an existing campaign, we intend to shift to an incubator project which we think needs more attention. Most of the articles now on TL and BCL Wikiquote have their photos. | There were 924 revisions created for 866 pages. 22 users have used the hashtag WPWPCB and it was used on 8 wikiprojects. See hashtag results here. |
Recruit new editors by teaching them one of the easy ways to edit in Wikipedia which is providing the right photo for an article and creating the appropriate captions. I have started as a newbie editor and engaged in this type of editing before WPWP and I can at least say that this is one quick way of engaging editors in a lesser task but with significant contributions for existing articles. This will eventually help them familiarize the interface of Wikipedia. | Most of the added photos are for personalities so there was no problem on putting the proper caption. | 486 edits are done on incubator wiki, 208 for BCL Wikipedia which was the original target, 110 for Waray Wikipedia, 58 for Cebuano Wikipedia, 29 for BCL Wiktionary which is also under the target Language, and 4 on English Wikipedia |
Engage existing editors and improve their skills on choosing photos appropriate for articles since one of the aims of aims WPWP is to increase the understanding of readers through adding photos relevant to the articles. | The specific tools cited on the proposal for the campaign were discussed during the orientation period but only a few of the participants have used the tools. | Since this was an online event, we can only run a maximum of 2 hours for training, tutorials, and open forums. An in-person event is still much effective. However, we were also able to do final meet up during the post evaluation of the campaign in October 2021. The top user (Markden24 with 358 edits) was still an experienced editor followed by newbies. It's still a positive thing that we were able to retain those volunteers we have since we conducted the very first campaign we had. Markden24 was one of the contributors when the BCL Wiktionary was still in an incubator in 2019. |

Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
The campaign was posted both on social media and on newsletter publications. The printed publication was released every week, four times in a row. The social media post was able to gather 1.1 reacts from different users. Two of the newbie editors have come to know about the campaign thru the printed publication. The social media post was posted on the Art+Feminism PH page since it has already an established number of followers. There was a total of 3,349 people reached and 931 post engagements. The international organizing team has also provided a good event page that's why we intended to use it instead of creating a local version. It has already the specific guidelines, the tools to be used, and the general information with regards the campaign. We were able to distribute the prizes among the top contributors and we were glad that we also received swags from the International Team and mostly of the editors have able to receive souvenirs from the program. Here's the content (Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) sa Central Bikol Wikipedia for the newsletter released which was written on Central Bikol language. I intend to translate it in English so the International Organizer could also utilized this for future use.
- What did not work so well?
The campaign should be run on a target local Wikipedia project but due to overlapping campaigns, we intend to focus more on incubator projects. But this was a good thing also, aside from the fact that we divert with the original plan. Although I have received technical assistance and helped on logistics by my fellow Wikimedians in the group, I still was not able to fully focused on the project because of other existing commitments.
- What would you do differently next time?
Being part of an International campaign is a proud moment for our local community which is I guess underrepresented. We were working a lot for almost years now on how to normalize the use of the Wikiprojects in scope of education, culture, human rights movement, and diversity. It is better to always see things on a long term perspective even if a project is under a rapid grant which technically ends on a small span of time. The timeline for planning and the actual event should equate to assure the success of the campaign.
