Goals
[edit]Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
- The primary objective of this label-a-thon was to achieve one million Malayalam labels in Wikidata and present them on Wikidata's 9th birthday. Yes, we were able to achieve the primary goal by adding more than 2 million Malayalam labels in Wikidata. Many existing outdated labels were improved along with adding new labels. However, we were only able to meet some of the objective goals, we are happy with the project, as it increased the community participation as well as new editors were introduced to Wikidata. Yes, We meet our goal completely. We are happy with how the project went and present the gift on Wikidata's 9th birthday.
Outcome
[edit]Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
Number of events: 22 events | 17 events | Online training and one label-a-thon were organized each month. |
Number of participants: 30 | 25 participants | 25 participants have registered for the event and participated in the label-a-thon. |
Number of new editors: 15 | 12 new editors | The new editors were tracked based on the account signup history and the first few edits they have made in Wikidata. |
Number of items created or improved: 600000 | 2000000+ new items were created/improved | There was more work focused on improving existing items than creating new items. The target was achieved and the outcome was more than 2 times what we expected. |
Number of repeated participants: 20 | 15 repeated participants | Many users that attended the training also participated in the label-a-thon. Repeated participants are tracked based on their contributions for the entire period of the label-a-thon. |
Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
- There were many people who want to know more about Wikidata, how it's useful, how they can contribute to Wikidata like Wikipedia. The event was mainly focused on editors who are new to Wikidata. The label-a-thon helped to achieve some part of our goal which resulted in good participation from the existing Malayalam community members and new editors. Participants started to learn more about Wikidata and we were able to get people who have the ability and can volunteer to add their quota to the development of Wikidata. Although the plan was to achieve one million Malayalam labels, we were able to achieve 2 times more than what we have planned within a year.
- What did not work so well?
- Most of the users were contributing from their mobile phones during this label-a-thon. Some users found it difficult in contributing to Wikidata from their mobile phones. Some tools that were used for adding labels didn't work as expected during the label-a-thon. Some edits made by some of the users were not updated because of the issues with the tools. The mobile interface tool used for adding labels didn't work as expected.
- What would you do differently next time?
- Introduce more tools to users that can ease the users to contributing to Wikidata. We could do in-person training events in nearby months to interact more with the editors and train then to use advanced tools for editing in Wikidata. Next time we will organize data-a-thon event in which editors working on different projects will come together to improve the data quality in Wikidata. We will list the data list and the missing ones that can be improved in the WikiProject page.

Anything else
[edit]Anything else you want to share about your project?
The project WikiProject Kerala in Wikidata was started in 2018 for improving the contents related to Kerala and Malayalam in Wikidata. From 2018 onwards we have organized some label-a-thons and data-a-thons for improving the data quality in Wikidata. This is the first longest (in time) label-a-thon that we have organized and the first funded label-a-thon by the foundation. We are happy to we could achieve the 2.5 million Malayalam labels in Wikidata and present it as a birthday gift on the occasion of Wikidata's 9th birthday.
