Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Despite the cancellation of the offline activities due to the CoViD-19 pandemic, we are still grateful for the achievement of the participants, especially in the international contest. Five of them improved at least 30 articles each and actively worked to improve the visibility of women in seven Philippine languages namely: Bikol, Cebuano, Ilocano, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Tagalog, and Waray.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

WikiGap 2020 PH event launch
Froy tutors a WikiGap participant
Maffeth tutors a WikiGap participant
Tutorial
Irvin tutors a WikiGap participant
Ramon orients an attendee
  • What worked well?

Personal networks help a lot in coming up with activities. As the project was being planned, an opportunity to give a talk on Bikol culture for college freshmen came from my former classmate in primary school, who now teaches at Naga College Foundation. She welcomed the idea of incorporating Wikipedia in my proposed lecture, which would have a follow-up workshop. An organization wherein I am also a member agreed to have an editing session. Unfortunately, on March 16, 2020, the Philippine government declared the entire Luzon area in the Philippines under "enhanced community quarantine" (ECQ) which is effectively a total lockdown. The majority of those who showed up in the launching on a Sunday afternoon were acquaintances and friends. Aside from the laptops used by the organizers, four participants brought their personal gadgets and even used their own WiFi connection.

However, in spite of the canceled offline activities, some of the participants continued their online activities.

  • What did not work so well?

The majority of the attendees were newbies and needed to be taught with the basics in editing.

  • What would you do differently next time?

The lecture with the college students and the editing session with my other organization will be conducted later this or next year. As an organizer as well as a participant in the international contest, I would propose to remove the point system and learn from the Wikipedia Asian Month guidelines.
