Grants:Project/Rapid/GLAM Banners for Philadelphia, PA
This Wikimedia Foundation grant has a fiscal sponsor. Chemical Heritage Foundation administered the grant on behalf of Mary Mark Ockerbloom.
Project Goal
[edit]Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".
- I would like to acquire a set of Wikipedia Space posters (see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikipediaSpace_SAAM_20160219_175001.jpg ) to be used at Wikipedia educational and editing events in Philadelphia. It was suggested at the GLAM Boot Camp that , as the Wikipedian in Residence at the Chemical Heritage Foundation, I might be possible to order a set of banners through a rapid grant, so that I could keep them to use on an ongoing basis at events in Philadelphia. Monthly events include Wiki open office hours at the Chemical Heritage Foundation, and a GLAM Cafe that rotates among institutions. Upcoming edit-a-thons include an event at the American Chemical Society (ACS) annual meeting in August (Similar to the AAAS edit-a-thon last year in Washington, D.C.), a planned Women in Science event for the week of October 11 at the Chemical Heritage Foundation, and events like Art+Feminism in March.
- If possible, I would like to have the banners for the ACS annual meeting, which will be held in Philadelphia, PA during the week of August 21-25, 2016. A Wikipedia event is being planned for the conference by user Keith Lindblom [k_lindblom@acs.org], who I will be assisting at the event. The banners will help to increase Wikipedia's visibility, educate participants, and present Wikipedia in a professional manner. If it is possible to borrow a set from DC, that would be acceptable. If we can order a set through the rapid grant program, that would be great. I would hope to have the banners a week or more in advance of the ACS conference which starts August 21, 2016. If it is not possible to get banners for ACS, I would still be interested in obtaining a set for ongoing event use in Philadelphia. The next major event planned after ACS is a Women in Science event which the Chemical Heritage Foundation is planning for October.
- Thanks to Andrew Lih, for sending accurate information on banner costs. I have updated the application accordingly. Planners for the October San Diego Wiki conference are also interested in obtaining banners, so perhaps this grant application can be revised to serve as a model for others.
Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?
- I would store the banners at my workplace and bring them to appropriate local events, as determined with event organizers.
How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?
- We are building connections with universities and other organizations in the local community through ongoing events and activities. The banners would increase our visibility in spaces where events are held, help to educate attendees, and present Wikipedia in a more official and professional manner. They would be particularly useful at events like the ACS conference, which brings in hundreds or thousands of people, who are attending a variety of events throughout the week. They would help to make us visible in a large, busy setting, and attract the attention of people who might not otherwise be aware of the presence of Wikipedia.
What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
- At edit-a-thons where banners are used, editors will sign up or leave their names. We also anticipate passers-by seeing the banners and stopping to ask questions.
Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:
- Number of total participants
- Number of articles created or improved (if applicable)
- Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable)
- Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects (if applicable)
Resources
[edit]What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- We have events at which we could use the banners, where potential audiences could view them.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense:
- What would the banners actually cost?
- Thanks to Andrew Lih, who sent the following information about banner costs:
The bamboo “X stands” as seen in that photo are printed on vinyl and can be packed up fairly small and reused as needed. The price as seen there is $210 per panel. That’s about $50 for the X-stand hardware, and then $160 for high quality color printing. This was done through my supplier in Virginia, CSI Printing. I checked online with a few other places, and the prices are comparable, with the cheapest going down to about $190. One place, with cheaper material, can go down to $170. I’d suggest baking into the cost at least two things: Shipping/storage case for the banners for transport/storage - $150-200 or so Shipping and handling for two events - $200 So a rough estimate would be: 5 banners x $210 for printing and X stands - $1050 Shipping/storage case - $200 Shipping handling - $200 TOTAL: $1450
- Who could order the banners?
- When could they be sent to us?
Endorsements
[edit]- Support Details of cost and content are still left to be decided but overall, printing posters is a conservative and well proven way to make a great first impression at conferences. This proposal should go forward in some form. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:26, 6 July 2016 (UTC)
- The cost information was updated and it is what I was expecting to see. I support because I have seen other groups create similar banners and use them with success. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:24, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
- support there is a travel set, and more permanent set, produced by WMDC. i would expect WMF could compensate for the additional sets, especially for a monthly meet-up. (message invoices among yourselves). Slowking4 (talk) 18:37, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
- Support I've seen Mary at work at many editathons, GLAM Cafes, etc. The posters would get lots of use. Smallbones (talk) 03:30, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
