Project Goal

[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Introduce a key group in Bhutan to the world of Wikipedia
  2. It is the first step towards a longer term goal of building an editing community

Project Plan

[edit]

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

One training workshop with 6-8 people

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

I will be working with the Bhutan Media Foundation, who will invite 6-8 journalists and bloggers, who are skilled in writing editing and research.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

I have asked Satdeep Gill, the Community Outreach Coordinator for India, to assist me for the training day. If he is unavailable he believes he can arrange for another experienced trainer, possibly from Bengal, which is closer to Bhutan.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

They are all fluent in English and will have printed materials, including books and newspapers, as well as online access to Bhutanese newspapers. The journalists will bring their laptop computers.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

I will follow up with surveys about the experience.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

I am seeking academic funding from the Australian government for a long-term research project with Wikipedia and people in Bhutan. I presented a paper on this at Wikimania 2018. This funding is to support a familiarisation session with a select group of journalists to collect initial data for that project. University of Sydney will fund some of my trip but not the costs of the event or a Wikipedian for training. Bhutanese use Wikipedia as a reference but don't publish to it themselves, and the Bhutan Wiki project, started in 2010, now is inactive. The Dzongkha Wikipedia also lies dormant. This workshop is a first step towards revitalising Bhutan's participation on Wikipedia.

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets: This is a pilot to introduce some key people to the publishing practices of Wikipedia and establish best practices for a larger project.
