Goals
[edit]Two of the goals - chapter meetings and GLAM initiatives were completely met. The third goal, the creation of a Women's Group inside Wikimedia Portugal, was met with partial success. While the GLAM initiatives went very well, and were extremely productive, I'm not entirely happy with the way the creation of a Women's Group was organized. The less than optimal conditions of the lodging (an hostel) were also a problem, especially on second week, not providing the conditions for a proper rest between activities.
GLAM initiatives
[edit]This was the first and principal objective of the project
- 1st week
25 January - Signature of a memorandum of understanding between Wikimedia Portugal, Universidade Aberta de Portugal, Cátedra Infante Dom Henrique, LE@D – Laboratório de Educação a Distância e eLearning e CLEPUL - Centro de Literaturas e Culturas Lusófonas e Europeias (Universidade de Lisboa) / Workshop with teachers of Universidade Aberta (dashboard) / Meeting with Vanda Figueiredo, from CIDH-UAb, about Commons and OTRS procedures, aiming at future activities
27 January - Meeting with Anabela Ferreira, from Museu de Alverca, about a possible GLAM partnership with the institution, creation of a local Wikimedia community, QRcode experience with local monuments, providing educational content to local populations far from the urban centers, and activities dealing with bringing the important industrial heritage of ALverca into the Wikimedia projects;
- 2nd week
27 February - Full day workshop at the National Library of Portugal (dashboard), as the starting point for a developing GLAM project between Wikimedia Portugal and the National Library of Portugal.
2 March - Mini-GLAM Cátedra Infante Dom Henrique (CIDH) - Ilhas do Ouro Branco / MNAA: As part of the partnership with CIDH, a free pass to the important exhibition As Ilhas do Ouro Branco at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, and I photographed the whole exhibition with my camera, for Wikidata/Commons upload (to be executed in the next few days).
Women's Group
[edit]The idea of a Woman's Group creation was proposed after the signature of the memorandum of understanding, by Prof. Isabel Lousada, who had just started a new Womens' Group with Cátedra Infante Dom Henrique, one of our partners.
- 1st week
29 January - A workshop /edit-a-thon was arranged with the MCCLA group, reaching about 8 academics, all women (dashboard). This first workshop covered article creation and edition, and image uploading. During this activity the Lisbon participation at Art+Feminism 2018 was planned. the event took place at Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade de Lisboa (FCSH).
- 2nd week
The whole week was dedicated to a series of workshops on Wikipedia with people from the Portuguese academia, as part of the nearing event Art+Feminism 2018.
26 February - Workshop MCCLA / FCSH (Dashboard), reaching about 10 persons, focus on Women studies
28 February - Workshop MCCLA / CLEPUL (Dashboard), reaching about 10 persons, focus on Women and Literature
1 March - Workshop on wikipedia at a class of a social communication course at UNL-FSCH (Profª Dora Santos Silva), reaching about 20 students, focus on Women and Midia
2 March - Workshop MCCLA / MIMA, the installation committee for the International Women Museum in Portugal (dashboard), reaching 5-6 persons, including key persons on the defense of women's rights in Portugal, focus on Women and Activism
Wikimedia Portugal
[edit]Meeting up with the board of Wikimedia Portugal was a collateral objective, suggested by the context of the signature of the memorandum of understanding, as the three members of the board would be in Lisbon for that event. It was completely achieved.
25 January - Meeting with the three members of the board, João Vasconcelos, Teresa Cardoso and Filomena Pestana. 26 January - Lunch / meeting with Filomena Pestana, resolving a number of pending situations, mostly related to Universidade Aberta 29 January - Phone meeting with André Barbosa, former member of the board, over the board change procedures / Meeting with Filomena Pestana and Teresa Cardoso, mostly about the plan of activities and chapter management
Outcome
[edit]Please report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
Signature of a memorandum of understanding between Wikimedia Portugal, Universidade Aberta de Portugal, Cátedra Infante Dom Henrique, LE@D – Laboratório de Educação a Distância e eLearning e CLEPUL - Centro de Literaturas e Culturas Lusófonas e Europeias (Universidade de Lisboa); planning and execution of activities on the scope of this partnership | Fully achieved | The memorandum of understanding was successfully signed, and a series of activities quickly developed from it, including a workshop with the LE@D teachers, a number of workshops with the MCCLA group, and the Ilhas do Ouro Branco mini-GLAM |
Starting the planned GLAM project with the National Library of Portugal | Fully achieved | A full day series of workshops took place at the National Library, including article creation and edition, overview of Wikimedia projects, as well as other GLAM projects, practical explanation of the model to be used for content upload during the glam. |
Forming a Women group inside Wikimedia Portugal; preparing for Art+Feminism 2018; engaging key Portuguese Women in the Wikimedia projects | Partially achieved | The Women group formation had to be temporarily suspended due to organizational issues; Art+Feminism 2018 successfully took place in Lisbon, as planned; a number of key Portuguese Women were engaged in the projects, with activities planned and continued till today. Nevertheless, the experience was very useful in providing extremely valuable 1st hand input and experience for the internal debate on how to create/facilitate the formation of a Women group inside Wikimedia Portugal. |
First approach to the Alverca community | Fully achieved | I was able to meet with the museum staff, as well as other key people from the locality, and plan for future Wikimedia events and initiatives, which are bound to take place on the next few months. |
Board meetings with Wikimedia Portugal | Fully achieved | I was able to meet with the three members of Wikimedia Portugal direction board a number of times, resolving a number of pending issues and planning future activities |
Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
The workshop at the National Library went very well, the plan for that event will certainly be used in the future. The meetings with academics from the various universities also went well, as did the partnership with the institutions with whom we signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
- What did not work so well?
The workshop with the LE@D / Universidade Aberta could have been better if people had registered on the project beforehand, as was the case with the National Library; Also, there were no computers available at the room, and a number of teachers had not brought theirs; I'm addressing those problems beforehand on current workshops, for optimal results.
In all the workshops there was a noticeable hindrance / constraint caused by the fact that I was the only Wikimedian providing assistance, for groups that reached 25 persons (LE@D workshop, for instance). On next events, we'll try to have at least one more Wikimedian there, to provide for presential support.
- What would you do differently next time?
Not staying at hostels (multiple people in same roos) - The difficulty on getting a good night of sleep, especially at the second week, caused a very noticeable physical weariness which started reflecting on the events, and could have been avoided if staying at a single room.
The way the MCCLA workshops were designed was suboptimal, with a lot of effort being directed to a small number of people, which kept varying from workshop to workshop, so that learning something more advanced than basic editing concepts was practically impossible. Next time we may have to consider planning those events in a more optimal way, in order to optimize resources and effort.

Remaining funds
[edit]Do you have any remaining grant funds?
The expenses exceeded the initial grant request of 520€ on 234.52€, mainly caused by the last minute flight booking, and expenses, due to the bad weather cancellation and the urge to be at Funchal by 5 March for the TV piece on Art+Feminism.
Anything else
[edit]Anything else you want to share about your project?
This was my first true experience giving workshops and orienting activities and events for Wikimedia Portugal, and the Wikimedia Movement at large. Despite some ups and downs, some of them caused by inexperience, I'm fully satisfied with it, and the results achieved by this project on our community.
