Project Goal
[edit]Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".
We have successfully completed the first part of WLB project fulfilling our target goal, have submitted the report of the same. Our Wiki Loves Butterfly Part-II project goal is as the previous one with some addition.
The overall purpose of Wiki Loves Butterfly project part-II is to increase the amount of free licence materials regarding remaining available butterfly species of West Bengal, India and related documentation and photographs in Wikimedia Commons and develop the quality and quantity of Wikipedia articles (Bengali Language, English Language) in this regard and particular documentation of further rarely available species of any location of West Bengal to be contributed in Wikispecies. The WLB project part-II further aims at broad spectrum of outreach programme, knowledge sharing and interest growing among people about Butterfly as well as of Wikipedia, Wikimedia commons, Wikispecies, contributing quality images on butterfly related events to Wikimedia commons involving more users as we have already done in Part-I of the same project. Apart from that the Wikimedia movement and local chapters will gain visibility and impetus through the success of this WLB project.
- Our project goal includes recruiting new editors. The WLB Project has so far included 11 new editors on Wikipedia who have started their Wiki venture with developing and creating articles and uploading quality photographs in Wikimedia Commons on behalf of the WLB project.
- As a result of this grant, the team members of WLB who are mostly students and under employed, shall have the financial support and impetus to run the project with a renewed zeal and enthusiasm which they have already shown in their activities during the Part-I of the said project. Most of our participants suffer from financial problems while moving to different forest area and butterfly hotspots which incur a huge expenditure on successive visits. The materialization of the grant shall help us to meet up the huge expenditure for accommodation, transport, permission, entry passes etc and we shall redouble our endevour and zeal in photo documenting and data collection in broader areas of action.
- In part-II of WLB project this time, apart from our species identification, documentation and article creation, we desire to work on sub-species level which will be more detailed genre of knowledge sharing.
Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?
Project Work done so far in Part-I
[edit]Our sole plan of WLB project part-II shall be to materialize the pending works of WLB Prat-I and its furtherance.
- Like the Part-I of WLB Plans are set in broad spectrum to cover the butterfly infested areas and Butterfly gardens in West Bengal for complete documentation through quality photographs, reports and article writing about the life cycle, habitat, characteristic behavioral activities, seasonal differences, host plant etc. butterfly species.
- Plans are also there for extensive outreach programme targeting a good number of uses and incumbents under the preview of this project and to contribute in huge quantity in Wikipedia, Wikimedia commons etc.
- Plans of future prospect of workshop and online edit-a-thon with a highly expertised butterfly related scientific research group (Nature Mates) which has been left pending in Part-I of WLB project because the experts members remained too busy to manage time for the proposed edit-a-thon. This time we will hopefully make it possible.
- Of the available more than 350 species in West Bengal, we have completed 163 species. In WLB part-II we hope to cover the complete series of Ventral and Dorsal documentation not done so far along with more species.
- Targeted plans are there to endow Wikimedia movement a high impetus through the broader spectrum of this project.
In course of the project, for the Photo Documentation and Data Collection in the different butterfly hotspots of West Bengal, the WLB team have planned and decided to move to every butterfly infested location at least one time each of the four seasons- Pre-monsoon, Monsoon, Post-Monsoon and Winter. In case of the local Butterfly gardens the number of visits shall be two times per season.
How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?
- Notified about the completion of the first part of WLB project in different butterfly hotspots of West Bengal and its report submission in WP Village pump of my community Bn Wiki. [1]
- The notification of the 2nd part of the said project from 1st June'17 to 31st March'18 has also been done in WP village pump of Bn Wikipedia.
- Mailed the link about WLB project part-II to many of the wiki editors of Bn Wiki as well as other language communities and invited them valuable suggestions and support for developing our WLB project part-II with better excellence and requesting them for multi-lingual approach.
- A press release in Hindi e-paper, Bhopal Samachar on 18th April 2017 about the WLB project.[2]
Being a project dedicated to species and sub-species level documentation of Butterfly, WLB part-II, like the part-I, strongly require very special and specific knowledge and learning on species and sub-species. So, the necessity of targeting a specific audience on special interest group becomes highly imperative.
- The expert views, opinions and suggestions of team Nature Mates, National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) etc. shall definitely enrich our knowledge and meet up our queries regarding the butterfly kingdom.
- Such interest groups are the best to be collaborated with and the worthiest to be brought under the preview of outreach target.
What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
- At the end, WLB project part-II shall directly contribute and support Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and wiki species in knowledge building as well as in total development of Wikimedia movement through relevant article development, creating more active editors, good quality photo uploading, creating more active editors, expanding outreach programme, close associates with special interest group, creating new interest groups about the butterflies of west Bengal and inspired them to developed to create articles as well as through personal mentor-ship.
- Strong involvement in the traditional Wikipedia communication, plans of online edit-a-thon with special interest researcher group, nature mates, targeting species and subspecies identification.
Follow-ups
[edit]- Discussion of the talk page of the project.
- I shall keep in close contact with the persons involved in my project through an already made up and maintained WhatsApp group and other social media groups. They shall be kept updated with latest Wikipedia events and workshops.

- Endorsement: I do strongly support the second phase of this initiative. This has been one of the finest initiative I have ever seen around the off-Wiki initiatives in India. The work the WLB team is doing, is not an easy work. I am really happy to see the way they successfully completed the first phrase of the initiative. I do believe that the the second part will be much better.
A suggestion: Please work more on multi-lingual article creation.
Regards. -- Tito Dutta (talk) 18:10, 18 April 2017 (UTC) - Laboriously done. A good project indeed. Pinakpani (talk) 18:59, 18 April 2
- Support - The first phase of WLB was a great combination of research, collaboration, field work and content creation and was executed with good co-ordination. The project lead is receptive and adaptive to inputs, suggestions and new ideas. There is no doubt it will bring more value to the knowledge of the subject in its second phase. Best wishes!! -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 16:01, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- Reiterating what I've on numerous occasions previously said that it's definitely a bold and ambitious project by one of the most prolific Bengali wikimedians.

- I personally love this project. I would like this to be replicated in other parts of the world as well. Satdeep Gill (talk) 07:55, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
- Support Commons:Category:Images from Wiki Loves Butterfly is full of high-quality pictures which Wikipedia needed and which no one would have provided in the foreseeable future except for the Wiki Loves Butterfly team. This is a great project in itself, and also a model project for anyone else doing photo hunts. I like that the team documented their outcomes at Wiki Loves Butterfly and even made a logo which they posted in various places to promote photography collaborations in Wikimedia projects. The amount of money requested is modest for all that came from this. I hope to see more. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:54, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
