Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. What is the purpose of the event you're attending and why is it important that you attend?

User:Athikhun.suw is a PhD candidate in human anatomy planning to host a Wikipedia workshop the IFAA19 Conference from 9-11 August 2019 in London, the UK. User:Jfdwolff, founder of WikiProject Medicine, will also co-host this workshop. This event is a large congress, and would be attended by 1,500 delegates including scientists, researchers, and physicians from around the world.
In the conference, we will be hosting a one-hour workshop for participants to learn how to edit Wikipedia hands on. We will also demonstrate indirect ways in which experts can contribute to Wikimedia projects such as publishing with WikiJournals, running an education program or edit-a-thon. Outcome of this workshop will be published in Journal of Anatomy after the congress. User:Athikhun.suw will also present a research work which addresses the quality, accuracy and readability of anatomy articles on the English Wikipedia. This work is being considered for publication in Anatomical Sciences Education, a very reputable journal in the field.

2. Will you be presenting at the event?

Yes, I will. we have been approved by the conference committee to host a 1-hour Wikipedia workshop. The workshop will comprise of the following topics:
  • Introduction to Wikimedia movement and how Wikipedia works
  • Accuracy of Wikipedia articles in medicine-related fields
  • Wiki Projects and Wikipedia education program
  • Wiki Journal of Medicine: a new platform for academic publishing
  • Contributing to Wikipedia and basic editing

Participants will be asked to bring their own laptop or tablet to the workshop. The first 4 sessions will be delivered as a 20-minute presentation. The rest 40 minutes would be a workshop for participants to learn how to edit Wikipedia hands on. As an extension to the allocated time, an edit-a-thon may be arranged afterwards at the conference venue.

3. What kind of outreach activity do you plan to do?

According to the programme committee, the workshop will be publicised in the online conference programme. We will also be reaching out to colleagues and research groups that attend the conference through email and social media to let them know about the workshop.

4. How will you let other participants know about your outreach activity?

Prospective participants will be reached out by communication channels of the conference, leaflets provided at the venue, social media, and email invitation to different groups of researchers.

5. Do you have a specific networking plan? (e.g. specific people, organizations, groups you would like to develop partnerships with)

A pre-event survey will be administered to acquire the audience's background. The survey is essential so that we can tailor the content and delivery style to match with the audience's interest and demographic differences. Participants will be asked to register for a Wikipedia account before the workshop. The idea is to avoid automatic blocking by the system given that all registrations would happen around the same time using the same IP address.

6. What is your plan to follow-up with new contacts?

During the workshop participants will be asked for a Wikipedia username, and a campaign will be set up in the Outreach Dashboard. The amount of contribution during and after the workshop will be recorded including bytes added, edit counts, articles edited/created, and number of media uploaded.
