Grants:Project/Rapid/Artexte Art+Feminism edit-a-thon
Project Goal
[edit]Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.
- Recruit new editors, including special attention to recruit editors which are underrepresented in Wikipedia’s editor makeup (women, people of color, indigenous people, LGBTQ+ identified).
- Increase skills for existing editors
- Add or improve content on the work of artists and authors that are women, people of colour and people from the LGBTQ+ community.
Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- We are planning one editathon with a pre-session training workshop and a participatory discussion afterwards.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- We have created the program page on the Wikipedia Art+Feminism dashboard and we have published the information about the event on our website. We will use social media including Twitter, Facebook (ARTEXTE and MACM) and Instagram to advertise the event and it will be included in both ARTEXTE and the MACM’s monthly newsletter that reaches many thousands of subscribers monthly. All communications include links to the event page as well as engage with other organisations and members of the community who may be interested in participating in our event. We plan on advertising our event on other community cultural portals such as, la Vitrine Culturelle, Artère, Mur Mitoyen, Art Forum as well as other listservs such as the Art Libraries Society of North America, local chapter, and local university listservs. Montreal is home to four universities, McGill University, Concordia University, Université de Montréal and Université du Québec à Montréal. We will also directly invite individuals and groups, mainly students, researchers and professors from whose research interests are likely to intersect with the themes of the day.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- We are working through the Art+Feminism initiative and are directly collaborating with the Canadian representative for Art+Feminism, who will be present at the event. We also have experienced editors, who have previously hosted similar events, who plan to attend and assist at our event.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian onsite and also provide online tools such as a detailed editing manual in PDF format which can be accessed before the event. We will provide access to a specialized library collection that includes more than 29 000 documents specializing in contemporary Canadian art and more than 1000 digital publications available in open access. We will provide lists of artists as suggestions for pages that need to be created, augmented or translated. This information will be shared before the event on our event dashboard. A number of reference materials and artist files will be on hand from the collection of the Médiathèque du Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal as well as Artexte’s collection. These materials will be selected by staff from the Musée as well as Artexte librarians, who will be on-site to provide research and editing assistance at all times.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- The editathon will be followed by a public discussion forum where the participants will interact with three invited guests who specialise in feminist art and digital initiatives. We will follow-up with participants by email to thank them for their participation. We will use our social media network to share our event results and we will invite them and new editors to our future editathons
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- This is the first editathon organized as a partnership between the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal and Artexte, and we hope that it will be the first of many. Many editathons have been hosted in Montréal for the past 4 years by the Canadian Art+Feminism representative, who will be present to support our event.
Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 1
- Number of participants: 40-50
- Number of new editors: 20
- Number of of articles created or improved: 30
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): N/A
Resources
[edit]What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- We have 3 experienced Wikipedians who will attend the events, access to 3 art historians on site, and 4 librarians that will offer assistance and mentoring onsite and online. We are supplying the venue for the event as well as an access to a specialized library collection that holds more than 29 000 documents specialized on Canadian contemporary art. Prior to the event, the library staff will be developing online and onsite training tools and tutorials in English and in French (these will be made available to the Wikipedia larger community). We will be providing honorariums for 3 invited speakers for the discussion that will follow the editathon. Speakers (3 x 150$) = 450$
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- Food and drink = $150 x 1 events = $150 USD
- Childcare (6 hrs + materials + insurance for an expected 10 kids and 2 babies) = 600$ USD
- TOTAL : 750$ USD
