We are hosting one editathon, entitled Architecture + Feminism, which will include a training based on Art+Feminism's training materials. Held during National Women’s History Month in the US, the event will brings together materials from female and gender non-conformists architects, activists and scholars surveying and subverting design discourse.
targetWe hope to familiarize new publics with both the process of editing Wikipedia and with the powerful impact of gender in architecture practice and historiography. In line with the stated aim of making a significant contribution to gender discourse in architecture in Southern California, we aim to engage at least thirty participants from Los Angeles, facilitate Wiki access to twenty new student editors, and create or improve fifty articles during the event.

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are hosting one editathon, entitled Architecture + Feminism, which will include a training based on Art+Feminism's training materials. Held during National Women’s History Month in the US, the event will brings together materials from female and gender non-conformists architects, activists and scholars surveying and subverting design discourse.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

The editathon is registered on the Wikipedia Outreach Dashboard and Art+Feminism. We have also made a Facebook event, printed and distributed flyers and advertised on the gallery’s website. We have publicized among students groups at USC’s MFA, M.Arch, B.Arch programs, as well as the Student Assembly for Gender Empowerment, the Undergraduate Student Government Diversity Taskforce, the Graduate Student Government Director along with other Los Angeles based art venues and institutions.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

This is the second edition that we will be organizing at 2426. The first one was about the Lost Infrastructures Of Los Angeles, in this process we have developed skills and experience.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We will provide Wifi internet connections as well as a limited number of computers, monitors, and projectors. We’ve asked participants to bring laptops if they can. In order to ensure high-quality content as an outcome of the event, we’ve created a list of publications (free of access digital articles, a cache of printed articles, and a bookshelf of hard copy books) about architecture, gender, and Southern California in three categories: female architects, female architectural historians, females as patrons of architecture, and female owned/operated spaces

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will created a survey and ask the participants to subscribe to the mailing list for future events. We hope Architecture + Feminism can become a yearly event in Los Angeles.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

We believe architecture represents an important part of artistic production where the “gender trouble” is even more severe than in other fields, and, therefore, it is crucial to act upon it.

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets: We hope to familiarize new publics with both the process of editing Wikipedia and with the powerful impact of gender in architecture practice and historiography. In line with the stated aim of making a significant contribution to gender discourse in architecture in Southern California, we aim to engage at least thirty participants from Los Angeles, facilitate Wiki access to twenty new student editors, and create or improve fifty articles during the event.

Resources

[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

The collective-run gallery in Mid-City Los Angeles, 2426ww, is offering us an in-kind donation of space, seating,Wifi for the duration of the event. Brendan Shea and Noémie Despland-Lichtert, who are organizing the event, will provide academic sources, Wikipedia mark-up training and one-on-one support during the event.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

We hope to receive 250USD to cover drinks and snack for 30 during 4 hours, as well as materials.

Food and drink (at $7 person)= $210 Supplies (name tags, printing costs, etc.) = $40
