Project Goal
[edit]Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.
- Recruit new editors
- Add or improve citation content in Wikipedia articles
- Promote Wiki Tuesday's and ongoing editor contributions through this space
Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- We are planning to have #1Lib1Ref editathon with hands-on training in how to add a reference available. The main event would be a two hour editathon held at our 'Wiki Tuesday Western' meetup on February 4th, 2019 and we will hold two mini lunch hour editathons leading up to that event, one on January 15th to kick start the campaign and another midway through.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- We will advertise to our library staff and to the students studying to become librarians at Western University through a campaign put together by our internal marketing and communications team. This campaign would include posts within the social media network of Western University, posters within the library space, emails to staff, and an event in the campus listings. At Western Libraries we've been running a Wiki Tuesday's at Western where we get together once a month to work on Wikimedia projects, so we will advertise to this group of existing editors as well.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- I have been editing Wikipedia for about a year and led #1Lib1Ref at Western Libraries last year. I have also lead an editathon for the JUNO Awards 2019 at Western Libraries to correspond with the Juno Awards ceremony being held in London Ontario this past summer.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- The event will be held in an instruction room at the D.B. Weldon library. The room is equipped with two collaborative worktables and rows of computer stations. Many of the participants will be librarians and graduate students with the research skills needed to add missing citations. Most likely, many will also be basic editors, with skills developed at last year's event. For new editors, I will help to support their learning through hand-on help and a curated collection of help documentation on the meetup page. We will also use the Citation Hunt tool to make it easier to find citations needed in articles.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- I will reach out to all participants to encourage they continue contributing to Wikipedia through Wiki Tuesday projects and meetings. Every month I send an email to all library staff to inviting them to attend the meetup. In addition to this, I will reach out to #1Lib1Ref participants beyond library staff with this same invitation to hopefully become active editors at Wiki Tuesday.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- Last year we participated in #1Lib1Ref and had 15 editors. We also took part in a friendly cross-Canada competition between library institutions to see who can add the most citations. I am hopeful that we can again incorporate the competition into our events, since this was a big draw for last year's participants.
Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 3
- Number of participants: 20 (5 more than last year)
- Number of new editors: 5
- Number of of articles created or improved: 100
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 15
Resources
[edit]What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- We have 1 experienced editor who will attend all the events and provide hands-on training. We will also put together a small team of about 3 library staff with editing experience to help coordinate and participate in the event. The library has many resources for us to consult, although we will try to reference open resources when available - Participants will be provided with a curated list of resources to use when referencing. The library will also provide access to the space to hold the event and the needed technology, and the library's marketing and communications team will help to promote the event (including printed materials needed for the event).
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- I am requesting funding in order to provide refreshments during the 1Lib1Ref campaign at Western Libraries
- Food and Drink for 3 events $500
Endorsements

- The 1Lib1Ref movement has enormous potential wherever it is taken up. However, the 1Lib1Ref event at Western could have an even greater impact because of the existence of the MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) program and the number of students and faculty dedicated to improving the information landscape worldwide.
- I strongly support this project and look forward to participating this year. Princessprickly (talk) 18:51, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
- I also support this project, and its potential to add substance to Canadian topics. LisaRae7
- I took part in last year's 1Lib1Ref event, and several of the Wiki Tuesday meetups, and thoroughly enjoyed both. It would be lovely if the addition of food to this year's event encouraged more participation. 129.100.106.112 19:11, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
- My name is Matthew Barry, and I'm a librarian at Western Libraries. I support this grant because it helps raise awareness in the library of the value Wikimedia has to the library community, and helps get librarians comfortable with using Wikipedia---as well as providing a chance for Wikipedia to benefit from the research skills of my fellow librarians. Mbarry23 (talk) 20:04, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
- I endorse this grant. I believe that this project, and many others like it are invaluable to improving open, freely-available information for all. We would certainly appreciate the Wikimedia Foundation's support in this regard. Chabichou29 20:36, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
- Scholarship builds upon the past. By providing richer citations Wikipedia becomes a more valuable resource and the public becomes better informed. The contributors also benefit from the research experience, and, when investigating an unfamiliar topic, the contributors gain an increased breadth of knowledge. Sometimes the sources uncovered show a claim in a article to be inaccurate, providing an opportunity to provide a more complete article. Mayhew18 (talk) 20:44, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
- This project is a great opportunity to contribute and participate to improving content within Wikimedia. The data and information that is added through events like this is an invaluable resources to students, faculty, staff and the greater internet community! I will definitely be participating. 129.100.110.99 13:50, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- Support 1Lib1Ref Edit-a-thons have a history of receiving rapid grants from WMF. This particular activity, which will engage and attract library workers from across Southwestern and southeastern Ontario will promote Canadian participation in a global initiative to make Wikipedia more credible by verifying its information with high-quality reliable sources. I whole heartedly endorse this application. Mcbrarian (talk) 13:10, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
