Project Goal

What will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative A MOOC consists of 40 hours of theoretical aspects + 20 hours of practical training, we plan to create the materials and then record the MOOC as it is given to a student in the class, then upload all the content to Wikiversity, to become an open-source material available for everyone.

The MOOC will be taught live using a virtual class tool, and willing Wikipedians can enroll in it.

In the near future, we are looking for:

  • The MOOC to be part of the research grant process, i.e., integrate the MOOC in the gran application in a way that people, who ask for research grants, and do not have a research background, can follow the MOOC. This change needs the collaboration of the grant team.
  • Periodically, for example, once a year or once every 18 months, the MOOC is to be repeated live, to give participants the advantage of the lecturer being available. This change needs the collaboration of the grant & strategy teams.
  • Translate the MOCC into preinclple lanaguges: ar, es, fr, ru, and zh, as well as provide support for anyone welling to translate it to another live language.

In the far future, with scientific knowledge obtained, we encourage the grant team to ask applies to submit their research into Peer-reviewed journals (It can also be a pre-request before the grant is accepted). Please note that the fee of the journal needs to be included in the grant. By doing so, the peer-reviewed literature regarding the movement will significantly be increased

Project Background

When do you intend to begin this project and when will it be completed?
It will start in October 2022 and it will be completed By April 2023
Where will your project activities be happening?

Phase I: Preparation of the MOOC

This phase will last for a month, it includes creating the structure of the MOOC, the order of the subjects as well as the time estimated to cover each of them.
The MooC will covres 5 moduls:
  • Knowledge: types & sources
  • The research plans
  • Sources in the scientific contexts
  • Data analyzing
  • Scientific writing
The structure of the course is the followings:
  • 20 sessions of 2 hours for theoretical parts.
  • 10 hours of 1 hour for practical parts.

Phase II: Creating content

This phase will last for 2 months. The main objective is to create educational content which includes:
  • Slide files, to be visually presented.
  • Supportive text to explain the slides and enable participants to go further.
  • Exercises related to the subject being addressed.

Phase III: Record & upload:

This phase will last for 1 month & a half, the objective is to create a stable version of the MOOC for later uses, this phase includes:
  • Creating corresponded pages in Wikiversity.
  • Record the MOOC, 60 hours in total.
  • Upload the contents to Wikimedia Commons & Wikiversity.

Phase IV: A real-time course using a virtual class tool

the course will cover intenslvly a concluded version of the MOOC, 30% less than the complete course. The removed part will be available at the course page as extra support. The main objective is to make the course possible to follow within reasonable time.
10 session, 4 hours each 3 hour theoretical part + 1 practical part.

What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?
We are familiar with the problem of lacking research skills outside the Academic circles. This project aims to provide non-academic Wikimedians with the scientific skills needed to accomplish surveys and studies to support the strategy movement team especially studies related to Regional and thematic hubs.

We will propose a theoretical and practical training material for interested Wikipedians to address both the philosophical aspect of the question, as well as the practical needs to implement the scientific approach to create high-quality reports and surveys to support the movement strategy team.

We will also invite all Wikimedians who applied for a research grant regarding the regional hubs to enroll in a live virtual course to help the develop their skills.

We intend to integrate the MOOC to become a part of the movement strategy research kit, If anyone intends to do research or a survey for the Strategy movement team. It will be appropriate for the team to propose the MOOC to the user (if he does not have the required scientific eligibility).
