Project Goal
[edit]What will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative
- What specific Movement Strategy Initiative does your project focus on and why? Please select one of the initiatives described here
- The project aims to focus on #33 Leadership development plan and #34 Skills development infrastructure. The reason being that the DCW is a underrepresented and developing user-group affiliate which has the potential to produce some individuals who can represent it at a global level.
Project Background
[edit]- When do you intend to begin this project and when will it be completed?
- This would be a four monthly project, and is intended to start 1 June 2023. We hope to have this project complete by the end of September 2023, and make the results available during the month of October 2023.
- Where will your project activities be happening?
- Online, and in-person, New Delhi and other relevant places, such as Hyderabad and Deoband.
- Are you collaborating with other communities or affiliates on this project? Please provide details of how partners intend to work together to achieve the project goal.
- There is no direct collaboration on this project. However, we would connect with other affiliates and learn from the resources that they have made available.
- What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?
- The project is intended to develop leadership and skills infrastructure at Deoband Community Wikimedia. We plan to produce a detailed course at the end of the project that the affiliate can utilize in its future programs. The affiliate has a potential to produce skillful leaders who can represent the community and the movement both inside and outside, and it is evident from the work that this affiliate carried out during Movement Charter Consultations November 2022.
- The necessity of this infrastructure has been briefly explained in our strategic learning posts, publicly available on Diff (blog). The current available blogs are about February 2023 and March 2023 learnings.
Project Activities
[edit]- What specific activities will be carried out during this project? Please describe the specific activities that will be carried out during this project.
- A need for a "skills and leadership development infrastructure" would be documented at the very beginning of this project. It would be followed by a preliminary research, aiming to ascertain how much course-related material is available, or made available by other affiliates, or Wikimedians, which the DCW could subsequently analyze, for its own use. There is a difference between a language-focused affiliate and a theme-focused user group affiliate like DCW - and that's why the need for scrutiny and analysis of this matter. There are not many theme-focused affiliates currently.
- The activities would be led by a "Program Lead", who would be assisted by an "Assistant Researcher". The researcher's work would be to locate all the available matter, reach out to experienced people from within and outside the movement, and present the outcome of their research to the Program Lead.
- This project would be aided by a conversational hour like DCW Conversation Hour, the aim of which would be to connect people working on this project, in a easy manner.
- Offline workshop (possible per findings from research) would be held at any given place, either in Deoband or in Hyderabad, or New Delhi.
- The detailed study/course would be formatted into a book format, and the book would be made available freely under a CC BY SA license. This task would be carried by a third person, called, "Editor", and the final work would be revised by the Program Lead, before the work is made public.
- How do you intend to keep communities updated on the progress and outcomes of the project? Please add the names or usernames of these individuals responsible for updating the community
- WhatsApp, meetings, mailing list.
- Who will be responsible for delivering on this project and what are their roles and responsibilities?
- TheAafi, Program Lead, founder Deoband Community Wikimedia. A call for a researcher and an editor would be made once the project is approved. The details would subsequently be shared with the MSG Team about who is working on this project, and in what capacity.
Additional information
[edit]- If your activities include community discussions, what is your plan for ensuring that the conversations are productive? Provide a link to a Friendly Space Policy or UCoC that will be implemented to support these discussions.
- We will abide by the Friendly space policies of Wikimedia.
- If your activities include the use of paid online tools, please describe what tools these are and how you intend to use them.
- Yes, we would be using Google meet for online meetings. To be able to record the meetings, we would require a subscription.
- Do your activities include the translation of materials, and if so, in what languages will the translation be done? Please include details of those responsible for making the translations.
- Yes, we might need to have some "skills and leadership" material translated into Urdu, in certain cases. The translations would be supervised by TheAafi.
Outcomes
[edit]After your activities are complete, we would like to understand the draft implementation plan for your community. You will be required to prepare a document detailing this plan around a movement strategy initiative. This report can be prepared through Meta-wiki using the Share your results button on this page. The report can be prepared in your language, and is not required to be written in English.
In this report, you will be asked to:
- Provide a link to the draft implementation plan document or Wikimedia page
- Describe what activities supported the development of the plan
- Describe how and where you have communicated your plan to relevant communities.
- Report on how your funding was spent
Your draft implementation plan document should address the following questions clearly:
- What movement strategy initiative or goal are you addressing?
- What activities will you be doing to address that initiative?
- What do you expect will happen as a result of your activities? How do those outcomes address the movement strategy initiative?
- How will you measure or evaluate your activities? What tools or methods will you use to evaluate your activities?
To create a draft implementation plan, we recommend the use of a logic model, which will help you and your team think about goals, activities, outcomes, and other factors in an organized way. Please refer the following resources to develop a logic model:
- Overview of logic models on Meta-wiki
- Example logic models for reference for other movement activities (such as partnerships and edit-a-thons)
- Blank logic model template on Google Drive
Please confirm below that you will be able to prepare a draft implementation plan document by the end of your grant:
- As stated above, we will make the results available by the end of October 2023, however, the draft plan would be available by the end of the grant term i.e. September 2023.
Optionally, you are welcome to include other information you'd like to share around participation and representation in your activities. Please include any additional outcomes you would like to report on below:

- Strong support It's one of the core goals of WMF to empower and engage people (including volunteers) around the world to collect and develop educational contents under a free license or in the public domains, and to disseminate it effectively. I think a theme-focused User Group like DCW is working in that direction to building leadership skills for DCW members.Agbalagba T★C 11:29, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
