Grants:Project/Ainali/Video templates
Project idea
[edit]What is the problem you're trying to solve?
[edit]Explain the problem that you are trying to solve with this project or the opportunity you’re taking advantage of. What is the issue you want to address? You can update and add to this later.
Video is becoming a more sought after medium in the social media landscape today. To be able to use that to promote things like editathons or writing challenges could potentially greatly increase reach. Yet, to create visually appealing and consistent videos takes a lot of time and can be daunting for volunteers (and even affiliates). This is especially true if you only are using open source software which, right now, lack in features and templates compared to common proprietary video editing software.
What is your solution?
[edit]If you think of your project as an experiment in solving the problem you just described, what is the particular solution you're aiming to test? You will provide details of your plan below, but explain your main idea here.
Create templates with intros and outros that can easily be adapted and customized. These templates will adhere to the visual identity guidelines and be provided with all source files so it is easy to edit them. The templates will be in Kdenlive format, a widely spread open source video editor. The templates themselves will be licensed CC 0 but included graphics, audio and fonts may use other open licenses, which will be clearly specified both in credits section and in the downloadables.
Project goals
[edit]Explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant.
- Wikipedia template - for when the videos are Wikipedia related.
- Project neutral template - where project logos can be added as needed.
- Wikimedia affiliate template - more suitable for affiliate related videos.
Each template will have both intro and outro (with credits section). All text will be easily editable and graphics will also be made easy to replace.
Project plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
The project will mainly be about designing, but also include feedback rounds. After the design is ready, documentation on how to use them will be written. Finally, announcement of the availability of the templates on appropriate places on-wiki (like Commons, Outreach and meta) to affiliates and on mailing lists will take place.
Budget
[edit]How you will use the funds you are requesting? List bullet points for each expense. (You can create a table later if needed.) Don’t forget to include a total amount, and update this amount in the Probox at the top of your page too!
Full time work for 1.5 months x 3,000 USD = 4,500 USD
Community engagement
[edit]How will you let others in your community know about your project? Why are you targeting a specific audience? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project? Community input and participation helps make projects successful.
I will use the video mailing list to get feedback from the community. That is probably where the interested people hangout. But I will also reach out on Commons Village pump and on Outreach (where there are some people creating videos hanging out).
Sustainability
[edit]What do you expect will happen to your project after the grant ends? How might the project be continued or grown in new ways afterwards?
After this project hopefully not only will the templates be used for creating videos but also be adapted to new more specific templates. This is probable since it is easier to modify an existing template than to create it from scratch. Perhaps we will see well crafted editathon templates, Wiki Loves templates and so on.
Measures of success
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include specific, measurable targets here.
The project will be considered successful if the templates have been used by at least five different community members during 2017.

Endorsements
[edit]Do you think this project should be selected for a Project Grant? Please add your name and rationale for endorsing this project below! (Other constructive feedback is welcome on the discussion page).
- I endorse this project for several reasons. It will improve the quality of outreach and communication activities and encourage more Wikimedians to produce video content about our projects from a range of cultural and educational contexts.
- Also, I know that the grantee has the skills and expertise to take on this project successfully. Sara Mörtsell (WMSE) (talk) 11:21, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
