Research proposal

Description

Description of the proposed project, including aims and approach. Be sure to clearly state the problem, why it is important, why previous approaches (if any) have been insufficient, and your methods to address it.

To understand the problems of this project, first it is necessary to dimension three intersectional variables: The world's population is aging and Latin America will be one of the regions most impacted by this growth. According to United Nations data, in 2050, three out of every ten people in Chile will be over 60 years old and we will go from the current 17% to 31% of the elderly population, making us the oldest country in the region.

The digital transformation has faced a dizzying increase in recent years and after the pandemic, it has experienced a greater acceleration, further accentuating the gaps. In this way, the group of the elderly population has historically been the most neglected in this process. In the pandemic, cybercrime and fraud increased up to 138% in Chile, according to a Fortinet report. In addition, false news multiplied, increasing the feeling of insecurity of people who have less knowledge and experiences on the network.

Considering these crossroads, and as a way to combat the unsustainable digital divide, our proposal works on the digital inclusion of the elderly, promoting access to free knowledge for everyone, in an intergenerational way. The Safe Digital Spaces for the Elderly project has as its main objective to build trust between the elderly and technology, -through different instances of training of tools and capacities- so that they can function comfortably in the different digital spaces in a safe way.

The project will last for four months and will be focused on three groups of older people from different geographical areas of Chile and will have the following expected results:

  1. To generate safe conditions and environments for older people to connect comfortably with the Internet, understanding the heterogeneity of the population and promoting good collective experiences, always from a human rights perspective and with a gender perspective.
  2. Deliver a research with participatory methodology with results on uses and digital gaps of the elderly.
  3. Promote the learning and use of technologies and the internet as a tool for social inclusion, addressing the digital divide and increasing the support networks of the elderly.
  4. Establish the first research links in Latin America between the elderly and the wiki language.

Budget

Approximate amount requested in USD.

40,000-50,000

Budget Description

  • Other operating expenses

Impact

Address the impact and relevance to the Wikimedia projects, including the degree to which the research will address the 2030 Wikimedia Strategic Direction and/or support the work of Wikimedia user groups, affiliates, and developer communities. If your work relates to knowledge gaps, please directly relate it to the knowledge gaps taxonomy.

The impact of Safe Digital Spaces for the Elderly belongs to two recommendations in relation to the strategic direction of Wikimedia 2030: the third (3rd) and the ninth (9th). In the first place, this project will promote safety and inclusion and promote the existence of adequate conditions for the participation of free intergenerational knowledge. In addition, it may report as an innovation project on free knowledge that works to reduce gaps towards equity in access. Finally, it is essential to highlight the role of the Wikimedia Chile team as a strategic ally to be the bridge in this meeting between Latin American older people and the wiki language.

Dissemination

Plans for dissemination.

The project's communication strategy will generate various communication milestones throughout its execution, increasing the possibilities of interaction and visibility in the press and social networks. This generates prestige, ensures the return on investment and, of course, makes a diverse old age visible.

In addition, a sustainable ecosystem for the digital inclusion of older people will be promoted where different organizations highlight the different milestones of this project.

Past Contributions

Prior contributions to related academic and/or research projects and/or the Wikimedia and free culture communities. If you do not have prior experience, please explain your planned contributions.

As the GeroActivismo Foundation we have worked and made available the Responsible Communication Guide towards Older People in a free way.

For this initiative, we are committed to sharing the results of the project's research and disseminating it in various media as a pioneering initiative in Latin America, between technologies and the elderly, with the aim of opening new Wikimedia explorations in this geographical area.

In addition, we commit to release all the graphic and audiovisual material generated in the project in Wikimedia Commons for free public use, with the aim of diversifying the images of the elderly on the internet and fighting against stereotypes.
