City of Recife/PE on Wikivoyage: sociotechnical contingencies for the absence of poorer neighborhoods

Research proposal

Description

Description of the proposed project, including aims and approach. Be sure to clearly state the problem, why it is important, why previous approaches (if any) have been insufficient, and your methods to address it.

In a previous survey regarding information about the city of Recife, located in the State of Pernambuco, in the Northeast region of Brazil, we noticed that there are good descriptions of tourist attractions located in prime areas of the city, such as, for example, Boa Viagem beach. However, Recife as a city presents a high sociocultural diversity, both in wealthy neighborhoods as well as in needy neighborhoods. In these needy neighborhoods, there are many options related to culture, events, living spaces and establishments, which can serve as places for socializing, learning and leisure for both the local population and tourists. An example of this cultural effervescence is the pilgrimage of Morro da Conceição, an annual pilgrimage that takes place between the months of November and December, in honor of the Catholic saint Our Lady of the Conception (Nossa Senhora da Conceição). However, the festival is syncretized by practitioners of religions of African origin (where the deity Oxum is equivalent to Our Lady of the Conception), and festive activities that go beyond religiosity also take place. The festival of Morro da Conceição is just but one example, among many, of cultural manifestations with tourist potential, in poorer areas of Recife.

Faced with this situation, the proposed research intends to survey the city’s neighborhoods that are portrayed in Wikivoyage, see how they are portrayed and identify the sociotechnical reasons for which these neighborhoods are not underrepresented in Wikivoyage. Our theoretical reference will be grounded on a sociotechnical approach, studied in an interdisciplinary way in the great field of Social Studies of Science and Technology, with authors such as Hernán Thomas from Argentina and Mark Warschauer from the United States serving as references. As for methodology, we will use data from the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), which conducts social research and is also responsible for a large database of statistical information about Brazil, which will be updated in 2023, when data from the Demographic Census carried out during 2022 will be released. In terms of Wikivoyage data, we will be able to make connections concerning the absence of the poorest neighborhoods and the sociotechnical problems that give rise to this absence.

At the end of the research, some suggestions on how the poorest neighborhoods in Recife can be better portrayed on the platform will be presented. These suggestions will possibly involve the residents of these locations participating in this description, which can be done, for example, through collaborative mapping.

Impact

Address the impact and relevance to the Wikimedia projects, including the degree to which the research will address the 2030 Wikimedia Strategic Direction and/or support the work of Wikimedia user groups, affiliates, and developer communities. If your work relates to knowledge gaps, please directly relate it to the knowledge gaps taxonomy. It is our understanding that this project meets the pillars of the Strategic Direction of the Wikimedia Movement for 2030, for it leads to the enrichment of its platforms, Wikivoyage specifically, by researching ways of including information about tourism in places whose residents are socially excluded, positioning itself as a source of open knowledge and thus meeting the pillar of knowledge as a service.

As a research project committed to the participation of residents of socially vulnerable areas of Recife, the project promotes knowledge equality, since knowing the processes and repositories of information that involve Wikimedia can give the residents autonomy over narratives about the places in which they live.

Dissemination

Plans for dissemination.

We intend to disseminate the research in the neediest neighborhoods of Recife, with the main findings being presented in person. Another intended way of disseminating the research is through publication of articles in scientific journals, systematizing actions and identifying conceptual relationships. We will participate in tourism and communication related congresses and events to further disseminate the research. And we will also use our social networks on the internet for this purpose, especially Twitter.
