Part 1 Understanding your work
[edit]1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.
The results of Wiki Loves X campaigns met our expectations. During the Wiki Loves Earth campaign, 31 users uploaded a total of 278 images. Notably, 77% of the users who participated in the event were new to the platform, which indicates a high level of engagement and interest in the competition. Additionally, the event's website reached an impressive 149,533 views. For Wiki Loves Monuments, 2,244 images were uploaded. Although only 16% of the users were new to the platform, it indicated that existing users (84%) were retained. Thailand's performance in the global competition was outstanding, ranking 13th out of 38 participating countries. Moreover, one photo from the competition won an international WLM contest. The event page was visited 90,381 times during the contest period.
Wiki Gap 2022 ran from March 6-16, 2022. Two online workshops were hosted during the campaign in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy Bangkok to teach them to edit Wikipedia and learn about the impact of gender gap on the Wikimedia movement. We had a total of 35 registrants on Google Forms and 28 on Outreach Dashboard. Out of these, 20 participants passed the minimum requirements and contributed to the campaign. The campaign resulted in the creation of 67 new pages on Wikipedia, significant improvement of 15 existing pages, and a total of 1,176 KB of new content added to the platform. These contributions are equivalent to 100-200 A4 pages, and will help to improve the representation of diverse perspectives on Wikipedia.
A total of 25 high-quality models have been completed either by 3D scanning or 3D reconstruction. Due to its size, they need to be edited before being uploaded to Commons.
Despite some delays in the incorporation of Wikimedia Thailand as an association, all the documents have already been submitted to the relevant authorities. The final approval is expected to be around the second or third quarter of 2023.
2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?
Last year, Wikimedia Thailand sent two of our members to speak at international events/conferences outside the Wikimedia movement. Tanapat was invited to the opening ceremony of Girls in ICT Day Thailand 2022 to speak about gender gap in the movement Likewise, Sopanant was invited to an international conference on digital literacy hosted by UNESCO. Sending delegates to external conferences was something new to us but has multiple benefits including reach, public recognition and potential collaboration.
3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?
It was the first time that Wikimedia Thailand sent our members to attend internal events on our behalf. Costs were also minimal because all these conferences (as mentioned above) took place in Bangkok. Speaking at a conference can have a significant impact on Wikimedia Thailand's visibility and reputation outside the movement. Doing a small campaign alone like we normally do may not have the same reach and impact as speaking at a conference. Running a campaign alone only relies on a pre-existing audience or partners. Speaking at a conference allows Wikimedia Thailand to expand its reach and connect with a diverse group of individuals and organizations, which can lead to collaborations and partnerships in the future. These connections can help us to reach the impact beyond what we can achieve on their own.
4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.
There were multiple communication channels that we used to advertise our activities including Wikimedia Thailand Facebook page, event pages on Wikimedia Commons, banners on the Thai and English Wikipedia and communication channels of our partnered organizations. For WikiGAP, social media and websites of our partners including the Swedish Embassy and UNESCO Bangkok were used. Last year was the first time that we used “events” on our facebook page to advertise the WikiGap and Wiki Loves campaigns. We understand the impact of social media in marketing and reach but we never used social media effectively. We believe that this implementation is associated with a much higher number of pageviews for Wiki Loves campaigns. Number of page views for WLE and WLM was 149,533 and 90,381, respectively.

Part 2: Your main learning
[edit]8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?
WLE and WLM may have had stricter guidelines or requirements that deterred new users from participating. For example, participants may have been required to provide detailed descriptions or historical context for their photos, which could have been a barrier for new users who are less familiar with the cultural heritage sites in Thailand. A more user-friendly user interface might break this barrier.
9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?
Number of images uploaded during the WLM campaign reached 2,000 which is 27 times higher than that of the WLE. We suspect two primary reasons for this. First, we provided stronger incentives for WLM participants, particularly a scholarship to attend Wikimania 2023 in Singapore. Offering incentives can be a powerful motivator for participants, particularly when the reward is tangible and valuable. The scholarship to attend Wikimania 2023 is a strong incentive because it provides an opportunity for participants to gain new skills, connect with other Wikimedia contributors, and potentially further their involvement in the community.
10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?
We might increase the total prize money if the budget allows us to keep up with the 10% inflation rate. Also, we could close the gap between the first winner and the remaining 9 runner-ups. Right now the first winner received a 10,000 THB voucher, while the remaining winner only received a 1,000 THB voucher which is 10 times less valuable. So instead of offering a single winner a 10,000 Thai baht prize, the organizers could offer multiple prizes at different levels, with a larger overall prize pool.
Non-monetary prizes can also be an effective way to make the prizes more tangible and valuable, such as a scholarship to attend Wikimania. Another example is an opportunity to have their work featured in a local exhibition or publication. It is also possible to offer different categories for submissions. For WLE, for example, examples of categories include landscape, wildlife, plants, etc. Hopefully, this can make the prizes more valuable and allow for a larger number of winners and more opportunities for recognition and exposure. We believe that these suggestions may be considered by the international WLE organziers, especially in the past few years that the number of WLE submissions are getting lower and lower.

We only partnered with like-minded organizations, meaning that their missions are aligned with the Wikimedia movement. Avoiding organizations that are politically affiliated can help Wikimedia Thailand to maintain its independence and neutrality. This is very crucial in Thailand because of limited freedom of speech, and especially when content on the Thai Wikipedia is under constant surveillance by the government. Political affiliations can create biases and conflicts of interest, which can compromise the objectivity of Wikimedia Thailand's work and create misunderstandings. Another learning point is that working with organizations that have quick turnover rates can be challenging. Having documentation of what was done can be helpful.
Part 5: Sense of belonging and collaboration
[edit]21. What would it mean for your organization to feel a sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement?
It means that Wikimedia Thailand shares the values, goals, and vision of the global Wikimedia community. We believe that ESEAP Hub really promotes a sense of belonging for us. It may seem less relevant on a global level due to the differences in culture, language, time zone, etc. But since the ESEAP Hub was established, it has made us feel more “at home”. The Hub can help to raise awareness of the work that is being done in this region, and to highlight the unique challenges and opportunities that exist. It can help to connect people across the region to amplify their voices and perspectives within the larger Wikimedia community. What happened in Sydney last November is a reflection of all the above.

Some of the approved budget were allocated to support one Thai Wikipedia volunteer to attend Wikimedia+Libraries International Convention 2022 in Maynooth, and two WMTH members to attend ESEAP conference in Sydney. These items were not originally listed in the grant application.
