Part 1 Understanding your work
[edit]1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.
Wiki Wednesdays' project goals were to demonstrate to Canadian cultural workers how important Wikimedia & Wiki data editing and learning are to discoverability on the internet because Google uses Wikidata as its primary source for structured data or linked open data (LOD) that drives its search engine optimization algorithms.
This project gathered Wiki-GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) workers in online training sessions to provide examples of how to create data visualizations of Canadian culture.
The goals of this series funded by the WMF GS were to continue peer learning sessions using this case study and other relevant case studies for Canadian GLAM to demonstrate the importance of Linked Open Data (LOD), online collections, discoverability, wiki data editing, data visualizations and the relevance of the wiki commons.

We had set up the webinars to run on Zoom and EventBrite from September to December 2023. Our initial marketing person had put together the behind-the-scenes administration for the series, including analytics.
The project manager became concerned about the terms of service changes with EventBrite and the technology integration between Mailchimp and the newsletter design, so a more streamlined technology plan occurred from November 2023 until February 2024, so the project budget could be maintained and the work completed.
2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?
Partnerships:
- Canada Council for the Arts: Secured additional funds to develop a comprehensive toolkit for visual artists and art galleries. This also included a membership with Galleries Ontario, enabling us to promote the toolkit through their newsletter to our target audience.
- BC Museums Association: Built on our initial WMF Rapid Grant partnership to administer and implement a successful January webinar. This event reached BCMA members and other participants across Canada, enhancing our outreach.
Expert guest speakers:
- For example, our technical advisor facilitated a guest speaker from the UK for our December webinar. This presentation provided valuable insights into the potential role of Wikimedians in Residence in Canada, enriching our project team's and participants' understanding.
- Mutliple other guest speakers offered insights from a range of perspectives, keeping the audience engaged for return visits.
These strategic partnerships and expert contributions were instrumental in achieving our project's objectives, leading to successful webinars and the widespread dissemination of our toolkit.
3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?
Integration of Visualization Tools: In the September workshop, Navino Evans of Histropedia developed a new visualization using the Sobey Art Award as a case study. This approach demonstrated how emerging artists' online discoverability could be enhanced through linking to Wikidata, providing a new method for artists to gain visibility.
Exploration of Linked Open Data: The October workshop addressed the specific challenges of Linked Open Data for the LGBTQ+ community. This session highlighted innovative strategies for overcoming these challenges, including creating more inclusive data representation in digital platforms.
Mobile Wikimedian in Residence: In our December webinar, we explored the novel concept of a mobile Wikimedian in Residence. This role, which is adaptable and not tied to a single institution, offers flexibility and supports the Canadian WikiGLAM movement in a new and impactful way.
4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.
We received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts to contract specialized services in the area of SEO and wikidata editing tool kits, South Asian visual art culture and themes, as well as Indigenous content.
This additional funding from the Canada Council for the Arts also provided funding so the Project Manager could secure two Indigenous advisor for the project who were practising Metis artists involved with the Kooshkopayiw/The Awakening - Metis Arts Council of Ontario.
This Arts Council is part of the Cultural Commission of the Metis Nation of Ontario. Kooshkopayiw is planning on two years of regional outreach to Metis artists in Ontario to increase their profile, discoverability and exhibits in regional museums, art galleries, etc.
The final webinar of Series 2 - WikiWednesdays - Raising the Profile & Discoverability of Metis artists Tickets, Wed, Feb 7, 2024 at 12:00 PM | Eventbrite, has had one of highest registration levels of any webinar in the Series (currently at 37 as January 27, 2024).

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?
When we were working with Tracey Mae Chambers, to increase her knowledge of the Wiki community as a Métis artist, she got to a certain point, using the Tool kit funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.
However, when she wanted to create a Wikipedia article, we encountered difficulties and could not obtain enough regional support to create a successful article for her.
The project manager has received two pieces of technical advice in completing this work, and it remains a 'stuck' incomplete item until we secure more financial support or volunteers.
Part 2: Your main learning
[edit]8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?
In our original application, we stated that our team would like to continue to show the impact of wikidata edits and their connections to GLAM institutions in Canada through knowledge graphs, mixed media online learning (Power Point presentations, online demonstrations, videos, etc).

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?
In our final webinar of the series, the guest speakers were funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, we faced some technical glitches where our team had to think very quickly to ensure that the participants where able to attend and that everyone could hear George Simard.
10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?
Our preliminary feedback on Series 2 has indicated that our target audiences would like to see a Series 3 structured around small peer learning sessions.
11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?
It was rewarding to see individual visual artists register for sessions and become interested in how wikidata could increase their online presence.

Our project team felt a sense of belonging from attending the North American Wikimedia Conference held in Toronto in November 2023.
Three people from our project team attended workshops and met colleagues from the Wiki GLAM movement.

We have started some research around Black History in Canada and we are interested in working with Black Wiki GLAM groups based on the background of Rhonda Yearwood.
