Women are an integral part of life. Women are less presented on Wikipedia and it's Sister Projects. There have been so many efforts (by the Wikimedia Foundation and its contributors) to counter this. There have been several activities within local and international communities to fill in the gender gap on Wiki. We (the Hausa community) have seen a significant improvement in the number of articles and Wikipedia appreciation by the female gender. We have seen keen interest and zeal by the women to participate in Wikimedia Activities. A recent study we conducted in our community (find link below) shows that; "all the women participants (100%) from our concluded project SheSaid Hausa, want to come back and participate in the next Wikimedia event; a significant majority of the participants feel appreciated/belonged to the Wikimedia Movement and also enjoy editing Wikiquote. However, we also found out that; the long interval from one project to another demoralizes and demotivates most participants to continue editing Wikimedia projects. Participants want to engage in physical activities that will enhance their focus and understanding. They want to feel appreciated for their efforts and time, and they prefer real experience to virtual or online. This spurs us to further expand our horizon on a 6month journey of active engagement and participation for the women participants in our community, marking some important International Women's Days for In-person events to honor the female gender. From the recommendations of the research;
This project is aimed at celebrating International Women's Day(s) in the first half of 2025. These days are International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11th February), International Women's Day (08 March), and International Girls in ICT Day (25 April).
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
We plan on a series of programs to retain and re-train women participants who attended and participated actively in our previous Wiki events by using important women Days to honour and motivate women. The following are the planned activities;
A) Trainings and Campaigns: This include different methodologies involved in bringing in more women to participate in the event. It also include various strategies in teaching the participants on Wikimedia policies and Guidelines, as well as how to contribute to the Wikimedia Projects. It will be achieved through the following steps:
i). Online training/campaigns: This involves virtual advertisement (ie. campaign) and/or training in which participants can be reached and attend events remotely from different locations in the focus area. The online events are important in reaching out to a wider audience in a short period of time. It's also critical in reaching out to long distant participants.
ii) Offline/in-person events: This involves face to face events where participants will be trained or engaged directly with facilitators. This is specially important as most participants learn and understand quickly than virtually. It also create a sense of belonging to the Wikimedia Family. It enables active learning and give participants opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences.
B). Celebrations/hpnour: This is a new strategy for honouring the International Women Days (stated above) to show that Wikimedia honours and celebrate women all around the world. It will include a brief recall historical moments/histories achieved by women and to recognise some of our partners and participants for the dedication towards facilitating and attending our WIki events.
C). Leadership: This include assigning roles and responsibilities to some of the most active women participants from our previous events. They will be guided on how to lead and facilitate Wikimedia events. This is will create a sense of belonging to the participants and inspire them give more to the Wikimedia Movement, and, It will also motivate others.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
As part of our effort to bring more women from our community and retain them is to assign them some leadership roles. This is crucial as participants tend to feel more appreciated and involved in the Wikimedia Movement. We will therefore, engage some of our most active participants (who show leadership skills) in our previous events and contests to be part of the facilitators in other to motivate the other editors in making more contributions to the events. This team consist of some active women participants and facilitators from our past events. a) I (Uncle Bash007), will lead the event. I will be in charge of technical planning and training participants in achieving the projects goals.
b) Hauwa'u Suleiman is an experienced facilitator who led and facilitated some major events like the Wiki Loves Women She Said Hausa Campaign will be in charge of logistics and communication. She will work directly with the participants and share information about the project to participants.
c) Aisha Yahuza was the first prize winner during our She Said Hausa campaign. She has up to 6573 edits in the contest and created hundreds of articles on Hausa Wikiquote. She will train and motivate participants on how to participate and create larger contribution in a contest and win prizes.
d) Daharatu: vice chairman National Association of Women Journalists (Kaduna Chapter), is an important figure in convincing women from her organisation and other groups in attending our Wikimedia events.
e) Sanusi Gado: is an experienced editor and facilitator. He will be in charge of expenses, bookings and book keeping.
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The target participants are women organisations which we train in our last campaign; National Association of Women Journalist in Nigeria, Northern Women Association (Matan Arewa), Women in Politics, Jam'iyyar Matan Arewa etc. A set of 50 women from these women associations participated actively in our previous She Said events.
