Wikipedia for Associations

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

Internal Whatsapp group or Telegram

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

amThere is only 0.3% of content related to the DRC on French Wikipedia, and the situation is even worse if we consider other major languages. For having worked with youth associations in many cities in the country, I am truly convinced that if we make a partnership with these associations we can reach out to many people easily. I trust in the mass effect.

The idea behind this project is to work with some association leaders in the country by providing them with the fundmental notions of Wikipedia so that they can train their member to this helpful tool. We have discovered that most of the youth have a vague idea about Wikipedia. Some have even a bad image of WP that their professors at university gave them. This project is part of the strategic movement especially for its clusters C, F, H:

  • Invest in Skills and Leadership Development (global approach for local skill development)
  • Increased awareness about the Wikimedia Movement
  • Identify Topics for Impact (36(c), 37, 38)

This project is therefore targeted towards carrying out a campaign and creating sensitization (physically and online through various youth association community communication channels) to members of some non-profit associations in the country on how to properly search, edit, retrieve, use and improve information on Wikipedia. There will also be creation of awareness on the use of other Wikimedia projects such as Wikidata, Wikicommons, etc. The leaders of associations will also be introduced to various Wikimedia communities, events, and activities they can participate in. Around 100 or 150 individuals will be reached out.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

This is how we will carry out the project:

  • initial meeting with the team project: onboard every member about the project and what they are expected to do
  • reach out to leaders of associations: as of the context of the country, where digital literacy is not yet at a high level, it is more effective to individually contact people than to share a form for application
  • share a form to leaders to let their members apply for the training to come
  • meeting with the team to assess the submission and plan the next steps
  • launch the training for a duration of 28 hours (online and physical)
  • launch the mentorship and the edit-a-thon challenges for a duration of 1 month. We will also have a weekly office hour
  • award prices: after a meeting to assess contributions, we will award prices and conclude the training
3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

- SENSITIZATION & OUTREACH: this is an important activity, we will run it from the beginning of the project till the end. We will physically meet association leaders to discuss the project ant its impact within the country

  • TRAINING: this is the heart of the project. We will offer a deep training to selected association leader members so that they will be able to run Wikipedia-like activity in their respective associations
  • EDITATHON: we will be running regular physical edit-a-thon sessions where participants to the training sessions will be asked to put into practice what they learned
  • MENTORSHIP: every participant will be assigned a mentor after the training for a period of 1 month to help him/her in the Wikipedia journey
  • CONTEST: to motivate participants and other persons to contribute, we will run a contest for a duration of 1 month
4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

All people here are volunteers.

  • cities representatives: Yves Madika, VALENTIN NVJ, Marie Aembe, CapitainAfrica
  • mentors: see above
  • instructors: me, Yves, VALENTIN NVJ, CapitainAfrica
6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Language

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

We will expose participants to knowledge of Wikimedia movement and also correct some existing impression they have about Wikipedia articles and sources. New content will be added and existing ones improved.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Advocacy, Open Technology, Diversity

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language, Age

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants will be leaders of youth associations in more than five cities within the country: Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Kisangani, Goma, Bukavu, Bunia… Information will be passed through the various ministry of youth communication and messaging channels, to inform, remind, and send updates. Posters, E-flyer, and hard copy flyers will be disseminated before the event. Participants will be sent an online form to get their data and for registration. During the event, participants will have support from the organizing team on all things Wiki. After the events, participants will join as members in User groups, this will keep them updated and encourage participation during wiki events. Participants will be added to the existing messaging channel for follow-up, updates, questions, etc. These participants would also be invited to future events. We will also help them run edit-a-thons in their respective communities

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We'll try as much as we can to follow WMF Friendly Space Policy and UCoC.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal.
