Other (please specify) Wikimedia awareness, capacity building and community development.

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Billiri, a local government in Northern Nigeria, boasted a population exceeding 339,400 during the 2006 Nigerian census. Presently, its population has surged to nearly one million. This area is also home to esteemed institutions like a federal government college and a college of education, as well as various writers' clubs, associations, and other organizations throughout the community. Despite these significant developments, Billiri faces a notable absence of editors, let alone initiatives aimed at promoting Wikipedia within the community.

As a proud member of this community who has had the privilege of discovering Wikipedia, I feel compelled to initiate the inaugural Wikimedia promotion campaign and training program in Billiri. This endeavor aims to facilitate the emergence of new editors and inspire active champions of Wikipedia projects, thereby laying a strong foundation for the widespread adoption of Wikimedia products among the youth in our community.

Furthermore, this proposed month-long initiative holds the potential to bridge existing content gaps on various topics with the assistance of experienced editors. Many prominent local and international scholars, organizations, and tourist attractions in Billiri, such as historical and research sites, remain inadequately represented on Wikipedia.

In contrast to other communities that have benefited from Wikimedia training and community engagement, Billiri has yet to experience any form of such training or awareness regarding Wikimedia projects and how individuals can contribute to them. If this project receives approval, it will establish the inaugural Wiki community meetup in Billiri, designed to stay connected with current and future Wikimedia activities in the community and to track the journey of editors evolving into Wikimedia champions from Billiri.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project is scheduled to run for one month and aims to introduce Wikipedia to the Billiri community. The Wikipedia Promotions in Billiri will encompass five distinct sessions, along with the establishment of a Wikimedia community:

1. Two-day In-Person Workshop: Over the course of two days, using the expertise of three out of the five facilitators, participants will receive fundamental knowledge about Wikipedia. This will include creating accounts and making minor on-site edits for all attendees.
2. Two Series of Online Reinforcement Training: To provide comprehensive editing skills in areas like Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikicommons, two online facilitators from the project will conduct these sessions. The online component is designed to refine the editing skills of new editors and address their weaknesses.
3. One-Day In-Person Review Session (Final Day): Following the two days of physical training and two days of online sessions, a two-week interval will be granted for participants to apply the knowledge gained from the project. During this period, there will be a two-week Edit-a-thon, and winners will be honored with certificates of excellence. A WhatsApp group will be utilized to encourage editing and address questions arising from their learning journey. Subsequently, on the last day of the project, a one-day in-person training will be conducted to review participants' work, clarify any doubts, and award certificates to conclude the project.

Establishment of a Wikimedia Editors Community in Billiri: The last day of the project will mark the formation of a community for the purpose of sustainability. This effort will be facilitated with the assistance of @Usmanagm.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Additionally, we will closely monitor the three-week online edit-a-thon to prevent any unintentional vandalism resulting from lack of understanding.

Ultimately, this project will make valuable contributions and provide support to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons, furthering knowledge development and advancing the Wikimedia movement.
