This contest directly aims to add multi-language captions and descriptions to more than 500 images in Wikimedia Commons and we will focus on these 4 global languages (Arabic, English, Spanish, and French).
What is the impact of this contest?
Upon the conclusion of this contest, we anticipate generating over 500 high-quality images accompanied by multilingual captions and detailed descriptions. This contribution will significantly enrich the visual and informational content available on Wikimedia Commons, enhancing the accessibility and comprehension for a global audience.
For viewers, the multilingual descriptions will improve their understanding of the images, offering them insights into the cultural and social contexts they depict. Additionally, these images will also enhance the search experience by providing more relevant and accurate search results, as users will be able to search for content in multiple languages.
For Wikipedians, the availability of detailed and descriptive metadata will assist Wikimedia Commons editors in accurately categorizing the images and ensuring they are placed in the appropriate categories. We will conduct this contest on the Wikimedia Commons page, and we will add the images list with codes and required languages. Participants from around the world will compete to add accurate and clear descriptions and captions to some of the photos on Wikimedia Commons.
To encourage inclusivity and quality, especially for participants who are new to Wikimedia Commons, we are also offering online training sessions for those unfamiliar with editing on Wikimedia Commons.
The list of planned activities is provided below:
1. Contest setup on Wikimedia Commons:
- Creation of the contest page:
A dedicated page will be set up on Wikimedia Commons to host the contest. This page will contain all essential information, including contest rules, instructions, deadlines, and thorough and specific guidelines for participants.
- Image selection:
We will curate a list of over 1,000 images for the contest, representing a diverse range of subjects. Each image will have a unique code to make it easy for participants to identify and track their work.
- Language requirements:
Each image will need descriptions and captions in the target languages: Arabic, English, Spanish, and French. Participants can contribute in one or more of these languages as long as they are fluent in these languages. To avoid AI or direct machine translation contents, we will ensure the jury chooses to be a native speaker or an expert in these languages. Thus, we are going to have 4 juries in total.
2. Online training sessions:

Our team is composed of two experienced and dedicated Wikimedians, Wiki Asmah and Rotana, who bring extensive expertise in organizing Wikimedia-related projects and community-building efforts. To fully utilize our expertise, we have discussed segregating our tasks as below:
Asmah:

User: Wiki Asmah I have been a wikipedian since 2023 where I participated in the Facts for Democracy Edit-a-thon hosted by Wikimedia Malaysia and I won the Best Wikipedian award in that competition. I was awarded a full scholarship to attend Wikimania 2023 in Singapore which made it the first Wikimania I attended. I am most active in the Malay Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, among others, where I uploaded, created, translated articles and photos and ensured the usefulness of the images and contents that I provided. I am currently an active member of Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia and Wikimedia Eesti. My involvement among these two parties is because of my beginning journey in Wikipedia where I was part of the Malaysian community and my migration to Estonia to pursue my Master's degree. Due to my passion in the wiki world, I have decided to maintain my participation in these organizations and expand my contribution. In Wikipedia, I have been actively expanding short articles and improving the existing contents in Malay Wikipedia. In Wikimedia Commons, I am ensuring all uploads I come across have categorization and descriptions that are reliable to the contents uploaded. Ever since my involvement started, I have been active in volunteering into different projects hosted by the User Group and Chapter I am volunteering in. I organised the WikiScience Competition in Malaysia in 2023 and plan to maintain my involvement in Wiki Science Competition as an organizer in the future. I have also been involved in the ESEAP Conference 2024 where my main duty was as a Communications member. I have been appointed as the Communication Manager for the proposed CEE Conference 2025 in Tallinn, Estonia, should it be chosen. My volunteerism in Wikimedia Eesti leads me to several proposed projects where we are working with foreign university students within Estonia in Wikimedia. Furthermore, I organized the "She" podcast, which aimed to highlight the experiences and achievements of women in the Arabic Wikipedia community.
