6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The project aims to introduce the first-ever Wikimedia training and awareness initiative in Taraba State. With a population exceeding 3 million people based on the 2006 Nigeria Census, Taraba State is home to various educational institutions, including Taraba State University Jalingo, Kwararrafa State University Wukari, Federal University Wukari, and several other colleges and polytechnics. Despite these educational institutions and the intellectual clubs and associations present in the state, there is a noticeable lack of active Wikipedia editors and initiatives focused on promoting Wikipedia and its projects within Taraba State.

The primary change this proposal seeks to bring is the establishment of a robust Wikimedia training and awareness program within the state. This initiative aims to address the lack of representation on Wikimedia platforms and enhance the participation of Taraba State residents in contributing to Wikipedia and related projects. By doing so, the proposal seeks to bridge the information gap, promote local knowledge, and enable Taraba State's rich cultural heritage and educational achievements to be accurately and comprehensively represented on Wikimedia platforms.

The main challenges and problems this proposal intends to solve include the low level of awareness about Wikimedia projects, limited access to training and resources for potential editors, and the absence of locally focused content on Wikipedia related to Taraba State. The lack of representation from the state hinders the accurate portrayal of its history, culture, institutions, and achievements on a global platform.

To achieve this change, the project hopes through a multi-faceted approach, achieve the change and bring solution to the problems. It involves organizing training sessions, workshops, and seminars across educational institutions in the state. These events will educate participants about Wikimedia projects, encourage them to become editors, and provide them with the necessary skills to contribute effectively. Collaboration with existing intellectual clubs, associations, and educational institutions will play a vital role in raising awareness and fostering a community of Wikipedia contributors.

Additionally, the proposal aims to establish partnerships with local government bodies, educational institutions, and cultural organizations. These partnerships will provide support, resources, and platforms for the initiative to thrive. By involving academia, cultural leaders, and government representatives, the proposal seeks to create a sustainable ecosystem for Wikimedia activities in Taraba State.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The planned activities for the "Wikimedia Awareness in Taraba State" project are as follows:

1. Two-Day In-Person Workshops: These workshops, conducted by three out of five facilitators, will span two days and provide participants with foundational knowledge about Wikipedia. Participants will create accounts and engage in on-site minor edits, offering a hands-on experience to familiarize them with Wikipedia's editing process.
2. Two Series of Online Reinforcement Training: With the assistance of two online facilitators, this segment will involve two series of online training sessions. These sessions will focus on refining participants' editing skills on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms. The aim is to enhance participants' abilities and address any weaknesses they may have.
3. One Day Review Session: After the initial two-day physical workshops and two days of online training, a two-week interval will be provided. During this time, participants will be encouraged to apply their acquired knowledge by editing and contributing to Wikimedia projects. The one-day in-person review session will follow this interval.
4. Two-Week Edit-a-thon: A two-week Edit-a-thon will take place, during which participants will be actively engaged in editing Wikipedia articles. Exceptional contributors will be recognized with certificates of excellence. A WhatsApp group will be utilized to facilitate communication, encourage editing, and address any questions participants may have.
5. One-Day Physical Session (Conclusion): Serving as the final day of the project, this one-day physical session will bring participants together. The session's objectives include reviewing participants' work, providing clarifications where needed, addressing questions and concerns, and ultimately awarding certificates to acknowledge their participation and contributions to the project.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

To the best of my knowledge, despite Taraba being one of the 36 states in Nigeria, I am the sole editor there. I was fortunate to discover Wikipedia during a holiday when a training was taking place in that location. Therefore, I am engaging nearby editors for both offline and online sessions.

Project Lead: Yahuzaishat serves as the project lead and is a member of the host community. He possesses extensive experience as a Wikipedia projects editor, having facilitated two distinct Wikimedia programs. He has also actively participated in numerous Wikimedia events, such as the Wikimedia Awareness in Akko, Wiki Loves Africa 2023 in Northeastern Nigeria organized by the Fulfulde Wikimedia Community, as well as the Wikimedia Fulfulde Community Capacity Building and Thematic Weeks. He has also engaged in the Hausa Wikipedia Article Writing Contest and had the privilege of facilitating the Wikimedia Awareness at Pen Resource University. Additionally, he will facilitate the Wikimedia Awareness at Ummahia College of Health Science and Technology. Beyond Wikipedia, Yahuzaishat is an author and holds leadership positions in various organizations, including the Muslim Students' Society of Nigeria, Taraba State Association of Writers, Jewel Literary and Creativity Foundation, Hill-Top Creative Arts Foundation, among others.

Online and Offline Facilitator: Usmanagm is a highly valuable facilitator in the northeast region, and his contributions are greatly esteemed within the community. Through his initiatives, programs, and activities, he has brought about a significant transformation in Wikimedia Projects within the region. Due to his proximity, he will be engaged for both online and physical sessions.

Online and Offline Facilitator: Musaddam Idriss, the second closest to the target community, will volunteer his services. He is a seasoned Wikimedia projects editor, having successfully executed various projects in Northern Nigeria. As part of the facilitators' team, he is a champion of the Fulfulde activation on Wikipedia.

Facilitator: Huzaifakumo, another experienced editor, will serve as a moderator and ensure that all online sessions proceed as per the set targets.

Volunteer: A volunteer will be engaged to be part of the team who will help in areas around refreshment sharing, keeping hall in good state, etc.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

This proposal is aimed at engaging the diverse youths and students within Taraba State. Our goal is to involve these participants before project implementation through local radio stations and clubs. Participants will receive an online form for data collection and registration. During the project, my team member and I will play an active role in facilitating the training and ensuring that participants grasp the necessary skills and knowledge for contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects. The training is structured to include three physical sessions and two online sessions, ensuring that editors receive proper guidance on bridging the knowledge and content gap across various Wikimedia projects. To ensure the project's sustainability, participants will be invited to join the Wikimedia community after the events. This approach will help them stay updated and encourage participation in various Wikipedia projects. Participants will also be added to existing messaging channels for follow-ups, updates, and questions. They will be extended invitations to future events as well. Close contact with project participants will be maintained by creating a WhatsApp group titled "Taraba State Wikimedia Community," where discussions related to Wikimedia project development will take place. Furthermore, this group will serve as a platform for sharing information about the latest Wikipedia events and workshops, particularly those involving partnerships with other user groups.
