Situated in Northern Nigeria, Dukku stands as one of the prominent local governments in the region, boasting a population projected to exceed 207,658 individuals, as indicated by the 2006 Nigeria census. At present, it hosts a variety of institutions, including a University of Science and Technology, a health and nursing college, as well as writers' clubs and associations. Moreover, several business and social establishments thrive within its community. Despite these remarkable developments, Dukku faces a significant shortage of editors and lacks initiatives dedicated to promoting Wikipedia within the community.
As a member of this community who is opportune to have learnt about Wikimedia Foundation projects, I feel the strong urge to initiate the first-ever robust campaign and training program for Wikimedia in Dukku. This initiative aims to empower and inspire new editors, cultivating the emergence of enthusiastic advocates for Wikipedia projects. By introducing and creating awareness about Wikipedia and its affiliated projects in Dukku, my objective is to lay a solid foundation for the widespread adoption and utilization of Wikimedia products among the youth in our community.
This proposed month-long undertaking carries great potential for bridging existing content gaps on various topics related to the community. With the guidance of experienced editors, we can enrich the coverage of numerous noteworthy local and international scholars, organizations, historical and research sites, tourist attractions, traditional and cultural practices, community landscapes, and more in Dukku, all of which are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia.
Unlike other communities that have benefited from a series of training sessions and the presence of the Wikimedia community, Dukku has never had the opportunity for such engagement. If approved, this project will mark the inception of the first-ever Wiki community meetup in Dukku, serving as a platform for staying connected with the current and future endeavors of Wikimedia within our community. Furthermore, it will enable us to monitor the progress of editors, celebrating their achievements as they evolve into new Wikipedia champions from Dukku.
APPROACHES:
Training and enlisting 50 new editors from diverse higher institutions, writers' clubs, and youth associations in Dukku. This will encourage active participation from students and young individuals in various institutions, clubs, and local associations within the targeted community. Raising awareness about Wikimedia projects among Dukku participants. While some may be acquainted with the English Wikipedia, only a few are aware of the representation of other languages on Wikimedia, such as Hausa. Given that Hausa is the dominant language in the community, followed by Fula, the Wikipedia training project will prioritize Hausa Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sister projects (namely Wikidata, Wiki Commons, etc.) that promote free knowledge and open access to information, emphasizing the significance of this approach. Establishing a community of Wikimedia Editors in Dukku. A WhatsApp group will be created for the new editors, where they will receive guidance, stay updated, and receive encouragement in their journey of editing Wikimedia foundation projects. Providing training to participants on how to contribute to the various Wikimedia projects that are the focus of the training. This includes creating a Wikipedia account, understanding core content policies, grasping general editing principles, and learning how to create new articles, make minor edits, and enhance content related to people, places, organizations, etc. Utilizing the outreach dashboard, with the assistance of both offline and online editors, to monitor contributions and track the progress of the participants.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The Wikimedia Awareness program in Dukku will be structured around five key sessions. The community is already well-informed about the proposed project, and with the Project Lead being an integral part of the community, we can execute the following approaches:
Awareness Trips: These trips will involve sensitizing the community by visiting their locations and explaining the activities of Wikipedia and its sister projects. Informational fliers and handbills about Wikipedia and its sister projects will be distributed. The community members have already expressed their eagerness to embrace the project, and we will select a group of fifty participants for further involvement.
Online Onboarding Session: This session will introduce newly recruited Wikimedia editors to the Wikimedia projects and their activities. We will address account creation and minor editing issues during this online session, which will be conducted via platforms like Zoom or Google Meet. The session link will be made publicly available.
First Physical Workshop: This workshop will provide an opportunity for one-on-one interaction with the fifty recruited participants. Practical sessions will be conducted to enhance their skills in improving Wikipedia and its sister projects.
Second Physical Workshop: Participants who have gained a foundational understanding of editing will have the chance to discuss any challenges they are encountering. The project team will work to address these issues.
Second Online Session and Edit-a-thon: This session will be another training opportunity aimed at refining the editing skills of both new and existing editors. Following the training, there will be a three-week Edit-a-thon event where participants can showcase their skills. Outstanding contributors will receive certificates of excellence. Furthermore, the Dukku Wikimedia Community will be established to ensure the project's sustainability and provide a platform for ongoing engagement.

- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
This proposal is tailored for the diverse youth in the Dukku Community. Our goal is to engage these participants prior to project implementation through various local channels, such as local radio stations, community meetings, and club Focused Group Discussions. I am not only a member of three community associations but also the founder of the Dukku Youth Development Initiative, which boasts one of the largest followings in our community. My extensive experience in program management, leading people towards change, and my frequent appearances as a radio guest will play a crucial role in creating effective awareness and seamlessly influencing the overall implementation of the training.
These aforementioned channels will be instrumental for issuing the call for participation. Additionally, we will employ effective local communication channels to reach the youth, including E-posters, banners on social media platforms, and one-on-one interactions. I also have a substantial number of social media followers, particularly on Facebook, which will expedite information dissemination to our target participants.
Participants will receive an online Google form to register their interest. During the project, my team members will actively participate in facilitating the training and ensuring that participants grasp the necessary knowledge and skills for contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects. The training is scheduled to include three physical sessions and two online sessions, ensuring that editors are fully engaged and guided on how to bridge the knowledge and content gap across various Wikimedia projects in our community and beyond.
To ensure the project's sustainability, participants will be encouraged to join the Wikimedia community after the events. This will help them stay updated and actively participate in subsequent Wikipedia projects within the community. Participants will be added to our existing messaging channels for follow-ups, updates, questions, and inquiries. Through the Wikimedia Community WhatsApp group and in-person meetings, we will ensure these participants are consistently informed about the latest Wikimedia programs and are encouraged to contribute to its sister projects. Moreover, as we organize future Wikimedia events, these participants will be invited to continue making an impact.
To maintain close contact with project participants, we will share information about the latest Wikipedia events and workshops through the Dukku Wikimedia Community WhatsApp group.
