Wiki Loves Women

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The participation of Women in Wikimedia activities is still low. Furthermore, there are very few representations of African content on Wikimedia. There have been many efforts to tackle this. Wiki Loves Women is one of the beautiful ideas for bridging the gender gap on Wikimedia. The SheSaid campaign is one of the best campaigns in amplifying the voices of Women and recognizing their achievements in the Human World. The Wikimedians of Northern Nigeria User Group is a user group to prioritizes minorities. Thus, this group will focus on feeling the gender gap via this campaign. Historically, women are known to make significant contributions towards the growth and development of many kingdoms, countries, politics, socio-economy, science, art, literature, etc. Yet, very few of these contributions by women are covered on wikis and in modern historical writings among others. This project is aimed at looking deep into our region and writing quotations from notable women who contributed to the development of any aspects mentioned above and documenting it on Wikiquote. We will also use social media to dramatically amplify such quotations.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We have participated in the 2023 #SheSaid campaign and we had a great experience with lots of enthusiasm from female participants as the topic "Wiki Loves Women #SheSaid" is aimed solely towards increasing the visibility of women. We collaborated with women organisations National Association of Female Journalists (NAWOJ), Matan Arewa among others. This year, we plan on having a bigger campaign and engaging more female editors in Wikimedia movement through the following approaches:

i) Online Campaigns:

  • we will design online flyers with notable quotations and share them on our social media handles on Instagram, Telegram and Facebook.
  • we will organise online office hours and trainings of Wiki Loves Women #SheSaid campaign and how to edit Hausa Wikiquote

ii) Offline/In-person: we will organise 3 days in-person trainings which will cover;

  • Introduction to WikiLoves Women SheSaid campaign
  • History and policies of Wikimedia and its Projects
  • Getting to know Wikiquote and how to edit it
  • Hausa Wikiquote and how to add quotes from notable women, etc.

iii) Editathon/contest: to inspire and motivate editors to make larger contributions

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

I Uncle Bash007 have previously successfully organised SheSaid campaign, an administrator on Hausa Wikipedia will lead the event. Hauwau sulaiman a woman will handle direct contact with the female participants Gwanki will assist in delivering trainings to women participants. Sanusi Gado wil handle financial expenses and bookings. AYM8818 will handle social media campaigns. Yusuf Sa'adu and User:A Sulaiman Z will handle in-person campaigns/trainings Manaf25 will focus on ensuring compliance with Wikimedia Friendly Space Policies and Universal Code of Conduct

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target participants are women organisations which we train in our last campaign; National Association of Women Journalist in Nigeria, Northern Women Association (Matan Arewa), Women in Politics etc. We aim to have a bigger, wider campaign and invite participants from other organisations. Engage more Women and train them on how to contribute to Wikiquote.
