In the pilot edition of the Wiki Loves Museums fellowship last year, we had 4 fellows working on creating knowledge resources pertaining to Indian art and history. This year, we want to continue building on the fellowship, albeit with a thematic focus for better impact.

1. Currently, there are limited learning resources about Indian art, history in the public domain which has a direct implication on public knowledge about the arts, and inhibits interest in museums, and subsequently in the production of cultural scholarship. Through our fellowship, we hope to create knowledge resources on the theme 1950s focusing on post-colonial and post Independent India. The resource will chronicle the significant political, cultural and social events of the period that have shaped India’s present - through the lens of architecture, cinema, arts and photography. The resulting knowledge archive will trace the creation of a democratic republic including highlighting the debates around it -- a crucial teaching, research and public resource in today's time.

2. Wikipedia articles rely on citable sources and editors are often only able to access existing sources in the public domain. This means, a lot of Indian scholarship that is unfortunately resting within museums and libraries does not get referred to, and information in them is not represented on Wikipedia. Through our partnership with libraries and museums, we hope to be able to enrich existing articles. The resources expected to be developed by fellows can be in various formats - video, audio, written article, etc -- the research potential thus can inform different Wiki projects. All output will be uploaded to Wiki under the 1950s category.

3. Furthermore, this year's fellowship will give preference to research ideas and topics with a focus on South India and North East India to broaden a global public access to post-colonial histories & history of art from these regions.

4. This year, in addition to a presentation of resources, we hope that fellows can conduct their own editathons while presenting the resources.

Through Wiki Loves Museums, the aim is to create representation for India's museum collections on the world's largest free encyclopaedia, develop cultural knowledge resources & decolonize Indian art held in collections (museums / libraries) internationally by improving meta-data. This proposal aims at developing cultural knowledge resources.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The Open Knowledge Fellowship will be a 5-month part time fellowship with a mixed cohort of experienced, emerging and undergraduate researchers.

A 4 months part time fellowship where a mixed cohort of experienced, emerging and undergraduate researchers will work to develop educational resources and Wikipedia articles under an open license. In the end, fellows present their work to different audience groups (students, teachers, etc.)

Our activities include:

[October ] Establishing internal team and mentorship framework. Update Outreach list and strategy for sourcing Fellowship applications.

[November] Releasing an Open Call for Applications where applicants submit a research idea.

[December] Fellowship Orientation

[December] Mentoring Fellows : Fellows will be mentored by The Heritage Lab team and experienced cultural practitioners to help develop their research methodology.

[Jan-April] Editing Wikipedia each fortnight based on the research (virtual editing)

[April-May] Publishing and Sharing the resources (if possible an IRL event)

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

The Heritage Lab works on building connections between GLAMs and the public; this participatory and research driven approach to creating resources is also aimed at going beyond traditional forms of documentation. As publishers of open-access resources, we would hope to learn about :

> the impact of open access resource creation on researchers & their future motivation for contributions. We will do so by capturing reflections of researchers during and after their research.

> how does the chosen theme and open-access license speak to different sets of readers - scholars, educators, journalists, etc.

> the possibilities offered by the digital technology in reformulating art and historical research.
