Libya is renowned for its olive cultivation, high-quality dates, medicinal plants, and unique agricultural practices adapted to its desert environment. Additionally, the country has diverse methods of animal husbandry and the promotion of animal, plant, and fishery resources. However, these fields suffer from a significant lack of documentation in Wikimedia projects, particularly in terms of media and information derived from experts and individuals interested in documenting these domains in Libya. Main Challenges: 1. Limited awareness of the importance of documenting Libya's agriculture and natural resources on platforms like Wikimedia Commons. 2. A shortage of local contributors capable of producing high-quality media content (photos, videos, audio recordings) about these fields. 3. A lack of interest among researchers in academic and scientific institutions in documenting Libya’s agricultural and environmental diversity on Wikimedia platforms. 4. Weak connections between free knowledge communities, local farmers, and producers, which hinders the collection and availability of content on Wikimedia platforms.
Approaches to Achieve the Change: 1. Actively participating in the Wiki Loves Africa “from farm to plate” campaign to highlight Libya’s agricultural narrative and strengthen its presence on Wikimedia projects by organizing training activities focused on media documentation. 2. Raising awareness about the importance of visual and audio documentation through Wikimedia Commons, by conducting workshops for farmers, experts, and local enthusiasts. 3. Inviting academics and organizations focusing on agriculture and the environment to encourage researchers to document these fields, while providing the necessary tools for this purpose. 4. Developing a visual and written database on Wikimedia Commons that showcases Libya’s agricultural diversity, with a particular focus on desert farming and unique medicinal plants.
The ultimate goal is to enrich Wikimedia projects with Libyan content, showcase its agricultural and environmental wealth, and encourage scientific research and global awareness about Libya’s unique resources.

Our planned activities for the Wiki Loves Africa campaign in Libya will focus on engaging diverse audiences, promoting the campaign theme “From Plate to Farm,” and encouraging contributions to Wikimedia Commons. These activities will include advocacy, and training sessions, as detailed below:
1. Advocacy Sessions (8 sessions) These sessions will target key groups, including local communities, organizations, and individuals, to raise awareness about the campaign and the importance of documenting Libyan culinary and agricultural methods and processes. Purpose: Promote the campaign’s objectives and encourage participants to contribute photos, videos, and audio that align with the theme. Target Audience: Students, photographers, cultural enthusiasts, agricultural professionals, and food experts. Structure: Each session will cover the campaign theme, the benefits of contributing to Wikimedia Commons, and practical examples of contributions.
2. Introductory Sessions (3 sessions) To equip participants with the necessary tools and knowledge for effective contributions, we will conduct the following sessions:
Session 1: Campaign Overview and Theme Introduction Overview of Wiki Loves Africa, its goals, and the 2024 theme, “From Plate to Farm.” Discussion on how Libya’s culinary traditions and agricultural practices align with the theme.
Session 2: Introduction to the ISA Tool Hands-on training on using the ISA tool to add metadata and tags to images, enhancing discoverability and usability. Explanation of how tagging supports Wikimedia projects and connects content to relevant articles.
Session 3: Commons Licensing and Upload Guidance Explanation of Wikimedia Commons’ licensing policies, emphasizing free knowledge and open access. Step-by-step guidance on uploading content, ensuring quality and compliance with Wikimedia Commons’s standards.
