Vital articles are articles that are important to the growth of every Wikipedia. There are some efforts to create more articles around vital topics on Hausa Wikipedia, but there are still many vital articles that are yet to be created on Hausa Wikipedia, which are available on English Wikipedia, more especially on articles related to Health & Medicine, Science and Technology, Mathematics and Measurements (https://ha.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vital_articles#Science_(177_articles). These articles are hard to translate because of some complex scientific words/vocabulary. We will attempt to translate these articles with students and educators from ABU Zaria University. As I was once a student there and have a couple of companions that are willing to offer a helping hand,

Furthermore, another problem we are facing on Hausa Wikipedia is poor translations using content translation tools. Most articles created from translation (especially by newbies) contain errors, partly due to lack of technical know-how on how Content Translation Tool works. This project will aim at recruiting editors and training them on how to translate Vital articles effectively.

Plus, most Vital articles around science, art, and geography are often not translated because some scientific words are hard to translate or are absent in Hausa Language. Thus, we will invite professional Hausa Instructors to help us in translating some of these words to Hausa.

Challenges

a). Lower number of articles around Vital topics - Medicine & Health, Science and Technology, Mathematics and Measurements etc. [1]

b). Lack of technical know-how on how to use content translation tool

c). Poor translations of articles

d.) Some scientific words are difficult to translate or absent (as original word) in Hausa Language

e). Lack of retainment of students and educators from Science & technology departments, literature, i.e., most Hausa editors are from languages departments.

f). Low page views on Hausa Wikipedia

Solutions

a). We will attempt to translate Vital Articles around Health and Medicine, Science and Technology, Mathematics, and Measurements using students and educators from these respective departments

b). We will train participants extensively on how to translate articles effectively using the content translation tool

c). We will emphasize creating qualitative articles by awarding prizes to top editors that create articles with good translation

d). We will consult Hausa Language experts in attempting to translate complex scientific words and grammar

e). We will retain participants through continuous engagement in Wikimedia activities via our social media groups

f). The vital articles are articles that are frequently visited due to their significance. Thus, creating more of them will increase page views on Hausa Wikipedia.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The planned activities consist of both online and offline awareness and training. They include strategies on how to bring more editors, sensitise on Vital articles and their importance, as well as train participants on how to translate articles effectively using Content Translation Tool. they include:

a). Online: Social media is a powerful tool in reaching out to many audiences within a short period of time. We will, therefore, use social media pages like facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp groups and talk pages on Wikipedia to reach out to a wider audience. We will also organise online training to train interested participants who may not be able to attend in-person trainings.

b). Offline: We will visit selected departments (comprising of linguistics, sciences & Technologies, and Health departments) and invite them to participate in translating articles related to their fields of study. This is particularly important since most of these students are more familiar with some of the words and know their meanings or translations in Hausa. We will also organise face-face trainings for participants who are interested in joining the Wikimedia movement.

c). Experts: We will invite experts from Hausa language educators, Doctors, Medical Personnel, and some scientists who are aboriginal Hausa Native Speakers to assist us in translating some related terms from English to Hausa. i). Hajiya Hauwa holds a Doctorate Degree in Hausa Language, an educator and teacher of Hausa Language with more than 20 years experience in teaching will be around to share with us some fundamentals of translation to Hausa and help in translating some of the complex words to Hausa

II). Dr. Hamza Gado, who has previously attended many of our events, a medical doctor, and an alumni from Medicine Department, ABU Zaria; will train and help in translating medical and scientific terms/articles to Hausa
