6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Teachers are the primary source of knowledge imparting within many local communities in Ghana, and this makes them well-positioned to influence the people they educate be they students or fellow teachers. Strangely, though, there is an inherent lack of knowledge or very limited awareness on the part of many a teacher within the Techiman enclave as with regards to open knowledge and the value of wikimedia and its associated activities. The result of this is the low patronage of wikimedia projects and platforms which are a huge benefit to these very teachers and their collaborators in the field of pedagogy. This project is aimed at reversing this trend by introducing wikimedia to teachers of the senior high schools within the Techiman township to aid foster open knowledge and access to information. This will, among other things, shore up the number of voluntary contributors to the broader wikimedia project.

As a teacher, I have always urged my secondary and Advanced Level students to patronize the quality information and knowledge available on wikipedia, Similarly, the constant questions coming from other teachers which colleague teachers direct at the least sighting of my Wikimedia T. Shirts highlight the low level of knowledge of Wikimedia programs and projects. Thus, a project of this sort seeks to raise the awareness of teachers on Wikimedia; encourage these teachers to contribute to Wikimedia via Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons; and, to a large extent, improve the quality of the information and knowledge access. I also aim to provide training and support for using Wikimedia tools, which can help students and teachers develop digital literacy.

The enormity of the need for this training stems from the fact that many of the Wikimedians I have come across are either teachers or persons whose engagements relate to education. Many of the Wikimedia-related programs I have been privileged to participate in have had so many attendees being either teachers or persons hailing from education institutions like the colleges of education. Hence, with the minimum qualification of the senior high school teacher in Ghana being a degree, such a training would no doubt increase the number of editors for Wikimedia, but also enhance the quality of work or contribution coming from these fresh wikimedians. Furthermore, it is expected that the students and learners under the tutelage of these teachers will benefit indirectly from this project. Consequently, the content for the various local languages within the area will appreciate and become more visible.

In a nutshell, this teachers sensitization drive aims at introducing wikimedia and its activities and projects to senior high school teachers within the Techiman township whilst promoting open knowledge and information access.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. Advertisement and project promotion: The first point of call is to embark on a massive promotion of the project or training. This will be done, first of all, through social media publications onWhatsApp, X and Facebook. Also, there shall be distribution of program fliers whilst radio advertisements will be made intermittently to reach out to those who may not be social media savvy.

2. Stakeholder engagements: One way to get full participation from teachers in any program is to involve their respective unions. Discussions have already begun with the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT-Techiman Local Charter) and National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT). Further discussions or engagements will be made in order to get the full backing of these unions as the training in itself will serve as capacity building for their respective members.

3. Capacity building: Proper and timeous training is needed to build the capacity of trainees if they are to contribute effectively to Wikimedia. Training will be organized to introduce attendees to Wikimedia tools and vis-a-vis their proper usage. Similarly, resource persons in the form of experienced editors will be invited to workshops to train as well as equip members with the requisite skills to edit on Wikidata and to make uploads on Wikimedia Commons.

4. Tour: A designated location has been thought of and reserved for a fun photowalk for which we intend to gather very interesting photos to be used for our Wikimedia Commons training activities. We hope to leverage on this photowalk to discuss the quality of photographs worth uploading alongside the do’s and don'ts of Wikimedia commons editing.

5. Evaluation and Assessment: As assessment is a key factor in every training, there are plans to keenly track the work of all trainees. This will mainly be done by creating a dashboard to closely monitor active contributors and to pat them on the back for working hard, and to encourage the few inactive ones to up their performance.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

This project’s activities target teachers of the 6 senior high schools in and around the Techiman township. The schools include Gyarko Community Day Senior High School, Kesse Basahyia Senior High School, Kwarteng Ankomah Senior High School, Our Lady of Mount Gamel Senior High School, Yeboah Asuamah Senior High School and Techiman Senior High School and they are all found within the town of Techiman, which is the capital of the Bono East Region. Our initial engagements will include sending of notices to each school. This will be followed by a vigorous social media circulation of the message via Facebook posts as well posts on X. Finally there will be fliers advertising the program, its venue and time. Besides, we will solicit the assistance of some of the enthusiastic hopefuls to help with information dissemination.

During the program itself, we hope to engage participants in the training and workshops slated for the project. Where possible, we hope to allow for open forums through which those with special skills worthy of improving our collective Wikimedia experience will be given the opportunity to share their knowledge to enrich the program.

After the activities, the contact information of the various resource persons will be made available and accessible to participants. This is to ensure that they are able to get access to us to seek clarifications for anything. We also intend to make video and voice recordings of the key training sessions so as to reproduce them when needed by any attendee. Subsequently. the very many Wiki-editing guides and links are worth sharing so as to make those who are willing to access them gain easy access.

The retention strategy after this project will include, first and foremost, provision of souvenirs to the most outstanding participants and active contributors throughout the program. These souvenirs will include branded notebooks, T-Shirts, etc. As souvenirs leave lasting memories and impressions on people, they will serve as indirect reminders to those who will get them. We also consider encouraging participants to form Wiki editing and support groups in order that they can collaborate effectively in their Wikimedia volunteering journey. Furthermore, we intend to engage as well as collaborate with some of these participants in future projects. This is to ensure that they continue to contribute regularly to Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
