This is an initiative to collect and preserve the lyrics of Malayalam malas, which are traditional songs of praise sung by Muslims in Kerala. Malas are a rich part of Kerala's cultural heritage, and they provide a unique way to learn about the history and traditions of the region. The Malayalam Mala Project is part of the GLAM project in Kerala, which is a larger initiative to digitize and preserve Kerala's cultural heritage. The Malayalam Mala Project will collect lyrics from published works which do completed the copyright period. The lyrics will be scanned and upload in wikimedia commons then transcribed into Unicode using wikisource , where they will be freely available to anyone who wants to read. Later this mala will be singing by volunteers , record and upload them in to wikimedia commons.By leveraging the collaborative nature of the Wikimedia movement, the project contributes to the preservation and promotion of Malayalam literature, expanding its reach and availability.
Regarding the requirement that the malas selected for the project should not be public domain works, I have already had careful research on this. The selected 10 malas were already out in public domain since Copyright generally lasts for 60 years after the author's death or 60 years after the work publication. Few examples are given as follows.
- 1. Muhyudeen mala ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhyadheen_mala ) was composed by the poet Khazi Muhammad of Kozhikode four centuries ago.
- 2. The author of Nafeesath Mala named Nalakath Kunhimoideen Kutty Ponnani published this work on 1890 ( http://catalogue.mappilaheritagelibrary.com:8001/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=2329&query_desc=au%3ANalakath%20Kunhimoideen%20Kutty%20Ponnani ) . Which is older than 132 years.
- 3. Rifaee mala was in 1812. ( https://www.ripublication.com/ijhss19/ijhssv9n1_05.pdf ) Ref [ https://urava.net/articles/keralathile-malappattukal-noufal-adany/ ]
- 4. Badar Mala,1864)
- 5. Manjakkulam Mala, 1872 [ https://www.ripublication.com/ijhss19/ijhssv9n1_05.pdf ]
we have made sure the authenticity and accuracy of the malas with the organization called mappilakalaacademy runs with the help of Kerala government. In addition to this we have discussed with the scholars from Kondotty Bukhari college community who are experts with Arabic-Malayalam language and listed mala.
