The change we are striving to bring through this project is to address the challenges posed by homographs in the Hausa Wiktionary. Homographs, which are words with the same spelling but different meanings and pronunciations, can be a source of confusion. In the context of the Hausa language, homographs are even more complex and confusing. Some Hausa words have three different pronunciations, each with a distinct meaning.
Currently, in the Hausa Wiktionary, you can only find one definition for homograph words, which leaves out the other meanings and pronunciations. For instance, the word "Riga" has three different pronunciations, each associated with a different meaning.
To address this challenge, our main approach is to enhance the Hausa Wiktionary by focusing on homograph words. We aim to upload audio sound clips for each pronunciation of these words and attach them to the appropriate word entries. This will not only provide users with a clearer understanding of the pronunciation but also ensure that all meanings and pronunciations are accessible, reducing confusion and improving the overall quality of the Hausa Wiktionary.

Learning and metrics
[edit]- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
We aim to acquire a deeper understanding of homographs to improve our writing skills and the ability to identify words with multiple meanings. Our main learning questions include:
- 1. How can a better understanding of homographs enhance our proficiency in written communication?
- 2. What strategies can we employ to effectively recognize and disambiguate homographs in texts?
- 3. In what ways can homograph comprehension aid language learners in grasping the nuances of word usage across various contexts?
- 4. How can this knowledge help prevent misunderstandings and miscommunications by allowing us to differentiate between different word meanings based on context?
Our goal is to use this project as an opportunity to not only contribute to the Wikimedia community but also to expand our own language skills and understanding of homographs.
