Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The project aimed to collaborate with academic institutions and organisations interested in supporting Hausa wiktionary, and to increase a reliable content in Hausa Wiktionary. To make make it possible, we collaborate with Hausa Language Department of Kaduna State University. sensitization and outreach was conducted through various means, pamphlet shared among the prospective volunteers of the institution, recruited volunteers added to our social media handles. We had the opportunity to meet students and lecturers from department, and it was really interesting to learn from the students understudying at the Degree and the masters level, as well as the keynotes and guidance delivered by the lecturers. We are opportune to make use of the language laboratory during one of our in-person event.

We held two in-person events editors were mentored on Wiktionary editing skills, content curation, creating and uploading audio files to Wikipedia commons and linking to Wiktionary. Additionally, we carried out three online events the on-going project was discuss, future activities, support provided and building a community of volunteers. The volunteers were able to carryout task and assignment to close the content gap in Hausa Wiktionary despite their tight academic schedules.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Both the in-person and online events was enormous approach in achieving our goals, also using an academic environment has giving the editors much needed motivation and interest and also giving every participant the desired opportunity has yielded a positive outcome.Communication through our social media handles within the time frame as keeping in touch with volunteers, posting videos in the group about editing process help them whenever they find something challenging, and this serve as motivation and encouragement to the volunteers, also serve as a medium used promoting community interaction, problem solving and networking. Resources such as brochure and hard copy English-Hausa Kamus used also help in content contribution. Also, keeping in touch with our community members during implementation period help them to understand what we collectively trying to achieve.

These strategies was adopted because we are dedicated to improve retention rates and continuous engagement of participants to edit Wikimedia projects, and to train and groom community leaders to take up responsibilities.

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Our initiative to introduce Hausa Wiktionary to the academic community have been successful in recruiting more participants that are natives, students, lecturers who are knowledgeable and can guide others, this serve as a step to establish a community of volunteers for Hausa Wiktionary.

Tasking participants to work on contents gap that a paramount in understanding the language through educational contents has brought participants to work as a team and learn more about Hausa Wiktionary and different ways of contributions.

Though the challenge we are facing that limit community members contribution among others is the high cost of Data, and academic schedules, a most of the volunteers are students.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Our aim to establish partnership with Kaduna State University, which has open up reserch opportunities, and creating a community of volunteers in an academic setup, this serve as a motivation on the serious of what we trying to achieve. We hope to maintain the sustainability of the partnership and optimistic to collaborate again in the future. We understand in-person event was the most effective way equipping the skills of editors, where they could demonstrate what they learn and interact with others for knowledge sharing, while the online event serve as a way of following up and attending to challenges of the volunteers. More also we established new partnership with Nigerian Commons Photographers User Group, we seize the opportunity for some of our volunteers to participate in the Wiki sound campaigns.

Participants were train and contributed enormously in closing content gap in Hausa Wiktionary, content curation and contributed to wikimedia commons, given data enable them to a large extent and they learn various ways they can contribute to wikimedia projects.

Deficiency of lack of references, vocabulary and grammatical words was contributed by participants, as such Hausa Wiktionary is improved extensively. This outreach has expose Hausa Wiktionary to the academic community whom have shown desire and commitment to our course, thus we are already in the position of using Hausa Wiktionary in academic setting as well as a learning tool.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

The surprising thing is how community members related and work as a team to achieve the same goal. Conducting the in-person event within an academic environment has brought the participants to new dimension and opportunities. Participants have shown motivation to use their initiatives in editing words and carrying out task they are given. We learn community members are willing to contribute with proper guidance and support, follow up.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

The Hausa Wiktionary Community aims to have a more expanded contributors across the region and to partner with other communities and to use our learning to improve in future events. As a growing community we will make efforts to introduce the teeming contributors of Hausa Wiktionary to have the necessary skills, knowledge and resources to other wikimedia projects that compliments Hausa Wiktionary. This will be achieved through continued capacity building for the volunteers and team organisers.
